Finally saw this. Definitely one of the scariest movies I've seen. I'm actually not sure I'd change a thing. The longer runtime adds to the atmosphere. There were a few moments when I was simultaneously scared and starting to fall asleep, which was trippy. It also made me realize that most horror movies are you witnessing a nightmare, as opposed to this one which actually functions as your own nightmare. It does that incredibly well. I also found the storytelling more linear and coherent than expected. You have to piece things together, but there's an obvious progression of events that gets scarier as the movie goes on. The last 20 mins were excruciating in a way I've not felt since Hereditary.
Just caught this—unconventional, bold swing of a film! More of a moving painting considering its sparseness in nearly every aspect. Not entirely sure I enjoyed it as much as I respect its vision. Utterly gorgeous use of texture and light/darkness, and appreciate the narrative and visual ambiguities, but my patience admittedly wore thin in the second half. I was just desperate to see a human face at a certain point (which is likely the intention). Anyway, very glad this exists and to have seen it.
An all-timer for me at this point. Still probably the most unsettling (read: scariest) film I've seen as an adult. Afraid to revisit it now that I have a child.
Skinamarink was stressful to watch because I expected somethingggg to actually happen, which was probably the point? But then nothing happened and I was let down rather than relieved.
I know. Maybe I was just very brave and not afraid of the dark as a kid or something. I dunno. Part of me wants to watch it again to see if my opinion changes, but I’m afraid that a rewatch would actually just bore me because I already know it’s essentially just staring at grainy toys for 90 mins. Haha
I kind of get it considering the film's tone and pacing but also still don't know how all of the doors and windows of a house disappearing before it is is commandeered by a demon that proceeds to torture children for eternity as a bit is "nothing happening" lol
Haha I hear you. From what I recall though, that is more or less just implied since there’s no demon and no child ever shown? I could be misremembering. I do remember the windows and doors disappearing. Ugh maybe I should rewatch it. Ha
A lot happens, just offscreen and a fair amount of it is left ambiguous. I think the format can be explained as the film allowing metaphorical interpretations beyond it being a “haunted house” story. But yeah, it’s very much a mood-based film, definitely not a strong emphasis on plot/narrative.
Definitely implied, but pretty strongly implied considering at one point, Kevin's blood is splatted against ceiling, rewound, and splattered again on repeat
this may be one of those films I only watch once. hard to think it can be any more effective on rewatches
