I guess I meant messy moreso than dumb. I don’t think I liked it as much as peeps here and I think a lot of it went over my head. Or it just didn’t fully land for me. I’m not really sure which! I wish I enjoyed it more. It was still a lot of fun to see in theaters.
The more I think about the movie the more I'm liking it, like the ending with Stack and Mary coming to see elder Sammie is great. They could absolutely kill him but they're just nah I just wanna hear him play music again and then they go on enjoying their vampire lives
We'll see but if Warner Bros r serious on making an awards consideration play for Sinners then i hope they will re release it in an awards friendly release date
I mean if The Substance can get the Oscars push it did, this one can absolutely. It's definitely gonna be a contender.
usually I'd say something like this just gets original screenplay but after the demographics in the Academy shifted enough for everything everywhere to sweep, all bets are off for me.
My brother saw this and left right when the credits rolled and didn’t see the final scene. Friggin idiot.
I missed the final scene too. I saw the first one that came on pretty quickly in the credits but had no idea there was a 2nd at the very end. I'll watch it again though when it's on digital and catch it then.
Yeah I’m talking about the mid credit one that’s like a minute into the credits. He left before that.
I personally like it being a mid credit scene because it helps make it feel like an epilogue. The formatting of the credits up to that point help make it feel continuous, instead of a weird stop-start situation; if there weren’t a scene there, I’d still wait ‘til that point before leaving. It’s a good use of structure, in the same way that credits at the beginning of a movie or there being an intermission can be. Wonder what Patrick Willems thinks of that choice, lol, given his somewhat recent video essay. I overall liked that video, but this technically leans into an approach he was critical of there. Feel like it’s an example of, idk… if it’s thoughtful and purposeful and not just weirdly obligatory, then why not?
Maybe I was overhyped but I found this to be overall fine. Technically speaking it ruled but I thought the story and tone was all over the place in a way that felt messy for a two hour film and I overall thought it bit off more than it could chew. Honestly, you could take Hailee Steinfeld’s character of the movie, it would clean it up a ton. Both brothers having long lost love interests and Sammie having a brand new love interest felt like overkill. Two of the three paid off emotionally and thematically for me.
Steinfeld’s character and her relationship with Stack is one of the single most important parts of the movie
Every time I think “was it really that good” I read an article or listen to a podcast and I’m like yup move rocks ass.
The thing I realized when talking to my BIL about this over the weekend was that I really wished I didn’t see any promo material for this - knowing the fate of Steinfeld’s character and Stack, as well as some of the other info made the surprises less impactful. But that’s on me, taking a sabbatical from marketing for a while lol
