Bummed I can’t catch it this weekend given all of these reactions! Really glad that it sounds like Coogler made something special (again)
Said fuck it and went to a real late showing near my airbnb after everyone else went to sleep. This rocked
Damn. I guess the concession Coogler made with getting the film’s copyright back after 25 years was it to still only have a 30 day window
Ive gotta let this one sit for a minute. There was a whole lot to like, the dialogue, a lot of the shots were just gorgeous and creative, and a great ensemble cast and performances all around, but im still organizing my thoughts about the whole package. Looks like its a crowd pleaser and is gonna do well which is great for original and distinct cinema.
A great time at the theater with some strong and striking elements, particularly the cinematography and acting, but I don't think I'm as high on this as everyone else. The attempts to balance the mix of tones and genres don't always go smoothly, and the three different stop-and-start endings were pretty clunky. The end-at-the-beginning framing is also useless. Still, hoping it does very well.
Holy shit, this was incredible — fired on all cylinders. The cast, screenplay (especially for such a “simple” premise), score/soundtrack, editing, cinematography, sound and production design, etc. And yes, “that scene” blew me the fuck away. I got pretty emotional during and after because of how good/special it was and felt. Definitely feels like a film from a different time and that they don’t make anymore, but also wholly original and its own thing.
