Especially live. Probably the tightest sounding pop punk band performing these days. Saw a couple times the past few years and they were always so dialed in.
still like a number of their songs i think, but i'm hoping this is the album where they remember they're mostly married with children and aren't doing the bullshit they did last time
Not sure of lyrical content, but from what I've read so far they are embracing who they are and trying to make a fun sounding album.
well, good for them if so. just hoping they're aware that certain types of songs they might've made years ago won't hit the same way the age they're collectively at now (this goes for lots of veteran pop-punk acts, not just SP. not even close)
Man, I still remember buying and wearing a Simple Plan shirt in high school in like 2003 and having everyone just flame me for it in the hallways and during lunch. Apparently there were actually other people who liked them all this time.
I remember watching their set at Warped Tour in 2004 and people literally booed and bottled them. Really for no good reason. The band didn't care and had the biggest smiles ever playing. They had a big crowd too. I also enjoyed the set because they sounded great.
Fun story about my introduction to this band: Randomly came across a couple of their early demos for songs that eventually ended up on their first LP. Fell in love with them. A few months later they ended up opening an old festival here in Toronto called SnowJam (how Canadian) for Sum 41 and a few others. My brother and I went and couldn’t believe how tight they were live, immediately knew they were going to blow up. After their set, Chuck and Pierre were out walking handing out 3-song demo CDs (I know “My Alien” was one of the tracks on it), got a couple of them signed, and eventually sold them on eBay when they exploded for like $300 each. Super nice, humble guys, and still put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
Funny thing is, I never really had a "punk" stage in my life as far as dress and attitude if that makes sense. I just really liked the music and connected with it and continued to listen to them as I got older (which includes now lol).
Their last album was very hit and miss but the hits were big hits for me. This is one band who I would love to put out an unambiguously "great" album to silence their critics.
I'm surprised people don't think more highly of their self-titled. It shows a lot of maturity and really stands out from everything else they've done.
Their self-titled is my favorite album from them. I like that they did something different. Sadly, they have basically said that they wouldn't ever really go in that direction again.
