After 5-6 listens I’m loving this. It has everything they’ve done in the past plus some more modern sounds throughout
Wish a Little Fight was longer. Love Cherry Coke. Singles are still bangers. Gonna take a few more spins to get into the others.
"Confession" is probably my favourite on here. Those melodies just hit me right and I love the use of strings.
Stress reminds me of Thirst4Violence. I think this is a really solid collection of songs and has me excited for the other new songs when I was a little apprehensive at first. Confession and Skin & Bones are still highlights and showcase what they do best.
I think I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that this band just might not be for me anymore. Which is a shame since they used to be one of my favorites.
In the first verse of 'I Will Destroy This' there's a sound of a car horn, and every time I listen whilst driving it catches me out and I think I'm about to crash.
Just curious, what has put you off them? I admit I'm not a super fan either, but I think they've had a pretty steady sound over the past 25 years. Maybe a bit cleaner in their recent releases. For me, they're a really consistent band, and you know exactly what you're getting when you listen to them.
To me, the problem is the lack of riffs in the whole genre. A few years ago a huge chunk of bands decided that it's not cool with dual guitar parts anymore and replaced them with electronic elements and samples. See post above here about "I will destroy this" - could have had a cool riff, went with a car horn sample. Same thing with the recent From First To Last single "Genesis", verse in Underoath's latest single, entire D.R.U.G.S album and most of the bands in the genre (weird thing is that most of the bands have two guitarists). People say it's cool Silverstein are doing something new with their sound, but in my ears they just do the same as everyone else, and it just isn't very interesting to me. But their newer albums always have a few great songs. It's just not like before, when all their songs were great.
I think the only Silverstein album that's great all the way through is Discovering the Waterfront. Wind Shifts is close but "Arrivals" is terrible.
I too lament the trading of riffing for samples or extra chugging (DRUGS is a good example) in modern scene music/metalcore as a whole, so I think that’s a fine critique, but I do think Silverstein are creative and strong enough songwriters that each release still feels fresh and unique, even if I still have some critiques myself. I think their reputation as the most graceful of sound-shifters is well earned. what I find endlessly frustrating is that a lot of these bands bury the riffs they do have so low in the mix. Who is listening to metalcore and wants to hear the guitars less? Also arrivals is great.
There’s some fantastic guitar parts on the new album, the bridge of skin and bones is a good example! And I was listening to misery made me last night and there’s some great guitar stuff on there as well!
Totally agree on "Skin and bones" - that's one of the highlights to me on Antibloom. I don't say they don't have great guitar parts anymore, it's just when they do it often sounds like it's only one guitar playing (or both guitars playing the same thing).
Ready to turn this thread upside down: 1. Cherry Coke 2. A Little Fight 3. Don't Let Me Get Too Low 4. Confession 5. Skin and Bone 6. Mercy 7. Destroy 8. Stress
