I don’t even care about all the action/political intrigue, I just want an entire show about Blackthorne stumbling his way through Japanese culture.
I kinda of want to watch Silence after this is over. This show kind of acts as a prequel and explains why the Japanese hated Catholics so much almost 40 years later lol
Anther great episode. Loved the tea house part. Also whenever the one samurai lord who has leprosy is on screen you know they’re plotting some evil shit
Silence is great, one of my top 3 Scorsese films. I live about 30 minutes from where it was filmed and one my colleague's buddy was chosen as Neeson's double during a few takes. I highly recommend the book, although it's much more graphic than the film.
All caught up, this show fkin rules. Funniest moments are whenever Yabushige is confused about something and goes "huh?" or "oh?"
watching this with my housemate rn, we're enjoying it but the actor for the English dude is hella distracting lol. bro sounds like Tom Hardy in Legend
this is really great of course, the directing and acting are absolutely top notch but I have to say the plot moves in some really predictable ways a lot of the time. like considering I knew nothing about the real story going in and how everyone kept selling it to me as this story full of complex political machinations, I found myself guessing a lot of stuff early and feeling whelmed when I was right (Buntaro being alive was the most obvious example and borderline cliche how it played out, or Chekhov's pheasant in episode 5 which was just so overtly telegraphed with the gardener's death) I don't know if my expectations were a bit high based on the reception it's been getting but I was kind of expecting to have my mind blown every episode lol whereas this is an more of an excellent realisation of a story I feel like I've seen before
Yeah I find myself not really bothered by plot points being predictable because I'm so invested in how that affects the characters, the two you pointed out being great examples. I remember when we didn't see Buntaro die I thought it would be super lame to bring him back later but when they finally did I was too gripped by the dynamic that created between John and Mariko to really care. Likewise with the pheasant, I thought it was pretty obvious what was going to happen but that just made it more tragic to me. It wasn't obvious to John! Lol
yeah I do get it it's just the one thing that keeps me from loving this completely, even though it's still very good. like even the scene at the end of episode 4 that was clearly designed to play as shocking as possible was so easy to see coming that it lost some of that sting for me I will say the introduction of Ochiba addressed this complaint a bit because I genuinely have no idea what she'll do at any given moment and it's a really unsettling effect compared to every other character. I didn't even realise until she showed up how much I was needing a great villain in this
