Honestly would watch a sitcom that was just John, Mariko and his Consort trying to live together.

I’m trying to get one of my friends into this as they are into Japanese history but they’re convinced it’s just a case of white savior.

I feel that it’s doing a good job of avoiding that

 

I mean not really. Don't want to go into further detail why I don't think Blackthorne is a white savior without spoiling the plot though. It's definitely a lot more complex and nuanced than say The Last Samurai. I'll just say if the show executes it correctly it'll be clear he's not by the end.

Just explain to them that Blackthorne is based on an actual guy

 

So far he seems more like a pawn for the Japanese to use rather than a hero coming to save them.

That dinner scene was tense

low key filled with relief when Fuji was revealed to be alive after the earthquake.

 

That might have been my favourite episode so far.
