Oh no the narrative police are once again mad that this episode focuses more on visuals, world-building, and a single character’s performance than on “progressing the plot”
The car she was driving is actually Kier Egan. He was disguising himself as a car so he could trick the people watching at home.
Not one of the better episodes… But I liked seeing the lore on Kobel and early Lumon, even if it dragged a bit. Nice camera work too.
It was an entire episode dedicated to probably the most boring character in the show and, on its surface, failed to advance the plot much. It was definitely a drop off from what the show has been in that regard. That's a justifiable criticism. I still think it's possible we might appreciate it a little more on rewatch in the future depending on what else we learn about Cobel/the story.
Shout out to the location, manager, Ryan Smith, and everyone who found the coastal town in Newfoundland. I really enjoyed that aspect of this episode. And of course, a terrific performance by Patricia Arquette. Also nice to see James LeGros.
It was ok. The setting was sick as hell so that counts for a lot and I appreciate getting some backstory. If I didn’t like anything it was less the slowness and more that it kinda came close to the line of silliness for me. Cobel inventing it, the lumon jargon, the aunt’s dialect, all kinda felt iffy or forced to me. Will kinda depend if it ends up feeling earned/valuable that cobel invented it.
Idk how to explain it but there’s something for me about how in this show about brain chips that magically make a new consciousness in you, it was scenes of PA just talking to other people that strained credibility for me haha
The Patricia Arquette performance is my least favorite thing about both seasons of this show by miles, takes me out of it sometimes
huh, I really enjoy her scenes. I think the wackiness is a feature not a flaw (to a lot of this show!). she balances having both a comedic and eerie presence very well, and I thought this episode added a lot of humanity to an otherwise unhinged character.
As a person that typically agrees with that (re: takes me out of the show), I loved her in this episode. The voice is still a bit silly but it was a completely different side of her character. The scenes with just her and Sissy were great
Sometimes she’s good, sometimes she’s doing too much. I would put this ep closer to the latter category than the former
i almost blame the writing more, none of her character choices make sense half the time. the last time she saw mark she was screaming at him completely randomly as she was leaving her driveway in a way that took me out of that (good) episode. now she drove a few places and now she's like hey get him on the phone I'm helping? what?
Haha I’m like the exact opposite - I’m seeing the potential dots that connect her wanting to help Mark way more than Mark reaching out to her for help. She clearly has a very personal investment in Mark and severance in general, whereas Mark has no reason to trust her. But tbf we’ll probably see some of that apprehension from him next week
