I think this might be kinda right but I think there’s more of a personal aspect to it. Didn’t mark say something about Gemma hating writing thank you cards? And I would have to check but I think mark did all the files that corresponded to Gemma rooms

There was one shot of him in the flashbacks with his hair kinda pushed back and I was like “oh shit I almost forgot”

Just want to say I didn’t get to watch this until just now so I avoided this thread knowing people would talk about it and didn’t come in here on Thursday expecting people to use spoilers for every post because I’m a rational human being and deserve an award. Thank you.

Also my understanding thus far:

Gemma is Gemma (this show is too smart to do the clone cop out), and she is special. Maybe she naturally had conquered the Four Tempers or maybe she doesn’t have any amount of any of them so she’s a blank slate or something? But either way, Mark and Gemma met at the college in Kier and clearly struggled with having a child. As such, they’ve gone to the fertility clinics, owned and managed by Lumen.

Lumen is working on some sort of consumer grade Severance product. They are testing the process on employees and each division is contributing something towards their overall research, with the goal of going public with the product. When Gemma sought services at Lumens fertility clinics, something about her application and response to those cards interested them in her.

Gemma went out one night, she invited Mark and offered to stay in, so I do not believe she faked her death or willingly became severed. She was tricked and probably kidnapped by Lumen and was told she was special and her involvement in the Severance program would change the world. She had no choice and ever since, they’ve been splitting her more and more. As stated in S1, Lumen owns half the town and the police so yes, the police were in on it.

I believe each of those rooms is an experience curated to test the Four Tempers and when Gemma goes into the room, the data is recorded by one of the scientist (dentist, sweater guy, flight attendant, etc). That data is then put into a folder on MDRs computer that they “refine.” Refining is the process of taking the data gathered from Gemma’s innie and sorting it into the folders, which correspond to the Four Tempers (folders have been seen as WO,FC,DR, and MA).

Once a file is complete, they know which Temper it tests and it becomes a separate innie for Gemma. The unrefined folders are rooms/experience that don’t produce enough data and they delete that innie. They keep the room of completed folders and continue to push Gemma to see if they can break the Severance to ensure it’s 100% perfect.

Cold Harbor is 96% refined though, which means somehow data has been collected and sent up to MDR for Mark to refine. Maybe Cold Harbor had something to do with death as implied by the doctor. So, Gemma has gone into Cold Harbor before, but her outtie can’t remember it because they kill her consciousness in there every time and then reboot her chip. The goal being if they can somehow get her to remember dying and get her chip to successfully reboot after dying they can create an immortal consciousness that can be transferred via the chip to other bodies and that’s what they are planning on selling to the public.

 

i don’t think it is a spoiler to say that stiller and scott have confirmed she is not a clone

This theory makes the most sense so far.

 

I think Gemma will likely be a proof of concept of how the technology works rather than the actual completed product (her data/refinement/chip being what other people are buying for themselves). I think that’s what all the currently empty office space is for. Workers who will need to refine and test and customize the consumer version of the chip for each person who buys it. Unless there’s another intention for the plot question mark of what their expansion and huge unused office space is for.

 

Okay but where do the goats come in

 

I think the goats could be non-essential color to the world. Like their plan is to have a self-sustaining dairy and meat supply for feeding all the people who live at Lumon and do their 6 month training for their chips (and they aren’t some key to how the technology works or the final big reality twist).

 

the only thing i don’t buy is her getting kidnapped. it seems pretty clear based on the looks she was giving mark that she was saying bye bye. i think she went willingly and then didn’t realize that she wouldn’t be allowed to leave after doing so.
