Wow that's crazy.

 

With Islamophobia at what seems an all time high in this country I wonder if this is the worst time for Adnan to be retried. I'm sure there is still a lengthy appeal process, but apparently his attorneys are looking to get him out on bail.

 

Also, it'd be interesting to see what a Maryland jury that's not familiar with this case looks like.

 

I just finished season 2 and thought it was better than season 1. Season one was a fascinating true crime story/whodunnit/mystery, it raised a ton of questions and the intruige was compelling, but towards the end it was wheel spinning and while I don't hold it against a true crime story to have a resolution, it wasn't completely focused in the end. It felt insular. Season two is thematically far more broad and complex and nuanced. It ended up speaking to the war in Afghanistan and getting into how things were happening there and why it wasn't working, and Bowe as a person ended up speaking to American values vs execution: possibly well-intentioned but ultimately misguided and wrongheaded. It speaks to the casualties of war not just in a literal body count, but the mental toll war takes on soldiers and the frustration with being a cog in a machine. It got into the politics of war and wartime strategy and how vast a gulf there is between the politicians who instigate conflict and the actual military personnel deployed and involved, and then how big a gap there is between even them and those underneath them, serving them. The first season was compelling, but the second season was far more reaching and interesting and allows for infinite questions ranging from war to politics to morality to so much more. I was really impressed.

 

Just finished re-listening to season 1 of Serial and am on episode 3 of season 1 of Undisclosed. At this point, I'm convinced Jay and Jenn were involved somehow. I'm still unsure of where I stand on Adnan's involvement though.

 

That's a good idea. I need to re-listen to season 1. Is Undisclosed all about that case or just that episode?

 

The whole show is about the case--they go through every single detail, it's really fascinating

 

I kinda want to go back and finish series two, but every time I listen, I just remember that Bergdal is an entitled pos.

 

I get why it's boring to the common person but man I listen to that and he sounds like the dumbest army private in the land. Like nothing he said that made his 'leadership' toxic sounded any different than any other private would say.

 

And I get that. We ALL hated our leadership to some extent. There are things you can do to alleviate some of the burden. His approach is just perplexing. I would NEVER even think about leaving the FOB. I had a hard enough time convincing myself to get in a convoy of SUV's, much less walking out into the wild like he did.

 

the first season of undisclosed is all about adnan's case, but the second season is about a different (still interesting) case. definitely worth a listen if you enjoyed serial and would like more on that case. they go way more in-depth and approach things from a more legal standpoint. the first few episodes are a little rough (they're lawyers and professors by trade, not podcasters), but the production quality improves dramatically after a bit. i'd highly recommend it.

truth and justice is another podcast that approaches the case differently and is also looking at other cases. the tone probably isn't for everyone, but the stories are interesting.

 

I guess that's my point. He didn't have anything that everyone probably hasn't complained about at some point. Both enlisted and officer. He definitely has some screws loose in his head.

 

I'll definitely give both of those a listen!

 

Serial has a new podcast, S Town, released today in its entirety. Seems like a true crime story about a small town with a southern gothic tone, not exactly sure what to expect, but am going to listen to the first episode today.

 

My roommate recommended it, gonna give it a shot and hope its better than Serial S2

 

Just barely read a few things about it, definitely sounds like there was a reason everything has been shrouded in mystery. I feel like I might have to jump on this quickly to make sure no one spoils anything

 

Just started. So S Town is short for Shit Town and its hard not to picture Zach Galifinakis doing his twin brother character when listening to John.

 

This already has me hooked, much more intriguing than Serial Season 2.
