Sergio Vega, long time bassist for Deftones, has left the band.

COVID was a breaking point for a lot of people, and I started to question my place in the band and the future that I wanted for my career. I really started to need something stable because at that point, my contract with them was canceled. One day, I got a call from the guys about an internal band situation, and they asked me if I was solid and that I would have to fly out to LA to help work it out right away. I said of course, I was all in, and we can handle my situation later. But I can’t go back to my old contract. Our respective management had a conversation to discuss a new contract, and they offered me the same deal.

At that point, it was clear there was no opportunity for growth for me, so I declined the offer

Class act. That was very professional. Wonder why Deftones didn't make him a full member, can't believe they would lose out on that much money individually. Membership in big bands is such a weird topic.

Super great guy, talented af, and a friendly as hell.

I know people won't understand, to bring in a member full time is so hard, and not every band is Metallica offering million dollar signing bonuses. Sad to see him go, but the Deftones are the Deftones, they will move forward, and will find another quality bass player.

    Might be Spider-Man...

This is pretty surprising considering how long he was in the band. It never appeared at all he was a hired gun/touring only guy either.

Memberships in bands in general is a touchy thing. Big or small. You give up money and (ideally) voting power within the business.

Someone mentioned Metallica and giving million dollar signing bonuses. That’s literally the craziest part of that entire documentary, they vested a brand new member in their multimillion dollar organization on day one. That’s insane.

In Metallica’s case, they did mention that the million dollars for Rob joining was an advance. Still wild, but not nearly as much as a straightforward paycheck for that amount would’ve been.

yes. But I’m willing to bet it’s an even tour split but zero voting power.

like Bruce and the E-Street band. Even split, but Bruce controls everything they ever want to do.

Bon Jovi is the biggest example of this that it’s black and white widely known. Jon Bon Jovi is the only Bon Jovi ‘member’ on contracts.

Probably yes, it's clear they have no illusions about who's in charge though.

This, especially with Pat Smear who seems to have historically been an on-and-off "official" member of the band, I'm sure he and Rami have different arrangements.
