yea im doing a discog run and this is easily my second so far besides let it enfold you. (new one is too new) I loved let it enfold you in high school so theres some real nostalgia there that will make it tough to beat. I think the new one could overtake it though with time. I missed out on some great record still searching and the fire are freakin awesome. I'm excited to go into renacer next, I heard that album is sort of a weird departure but it works really well.
That’s sweet that you’re doing a run, definitely a diverse enough band to keep it interesting. The Fire is second only to SS for me, with LIEY right behind. I have no idea where the current one will end up, I’m going to guess ~4th, but of course no need to decide that now. I’m excited to hear your thoughts on renacer, I always liked it but it only really recently clicked in any meaningful way.
I’m loving renacer, it’s sooo different ha. Buddy also sounds very different with his cleans on this record, I think this must be when he started to really evolve a bit more as a singer.
Agreed on the cleans! And I’m glad you dig it so much. I’ve had a really hard time connecting with the less melodic/sludgy guitar parts and melodies but I’ve come to appreciate the melodic moments a lot more, and realizing they’re a lot more frequent than I remember. I was excited for the record because I like heavy but it wasn’t the brand of heavy i wanted. Like I said though, I’ve come around a lot on most of it.
The lyrics might be part of it, they're really negative. The production is also classic McTernan garbage. Also it doesn't have a lot of variety. I think it's still solid though, unlike this new record, which is pretty poor imo
I’m on the other side of that where the entire reason I cling so hard to The Fire within Senses Fail’s discography is mainly because of how negative his lyrics were on that album. He was just so damn good at writing such angry lyrics, and then he ditches it at the time they decided to go heavier than ever on Renacer... The Fire is the only album of theirs that I want to listen to front to back when I turn it on. Production flaws and everything, I love that album.
I was incredibly excited during the leadup to Renacer because Buddy said it would be heavy, he was advertising it as a big change.... but I expected it to be comprised of stuff that sounded more like the heavier side of Senses Fail prior to that, Wolves At The Door / New Years Eve / Lifeboats being the key inspiration. Like, taking those songs and pushing it a step further. I don’t think either of Renacer or Thorns had many songs that hit anywhere near as hard as those.
Orlando would be a good song live. That's about all I can say good about this record. And I love the cover. But I'm surprised you all like this so much, that's cool I guess
The bracket inspired me to listen to renacer again for the first time in years. It’s gotta be one of their better albums, and probably has buddy’s best lyrics too
Let's get to the EP songs, since they are 4 of their best. It's an example of how they don't have to be heavy to write great music. The guitar leads in Vines and Waves are so good.
But...but.... EP came out before Thorns and is so much better I guess it'll be light at the end of the tunnel haha.
Your call! I'm planning on listening to the new album this afternoon :) I wanted to get to it sooner, but my life has been a bit of a whirlwind these past few days!
So what all is left? Pull the Thorns from Your Heart If There Is Light, It Will Find You Follow Your Bliss disc 2/In Your Absence EP/other various songs not covered yet Are you planning on that third group being all in one bracket?
Double Cross Alright opening track. Not much stands out on my first listen, to be honest. I liked the part from 1:45 to 1:55 the best.
Elevator to the Gallows I like this song more than Double Cross - pretty catchy chorus! I like the lyric "I would rather die than be without my love"
New Jersey Makes, The World Takes I appreciate Buddy's personal lyrics and I thought this track had a solid outro. I'm not a huge fan of the way he sings "no" during the chorus though. Maybe it'll grow on me?
