I haven't mentioned that this is a top 10 goat albums for me, and really the only one I return to aside from a few tracks on the sophmore LP. So unbelievably hard to pick because I genuinely know and love every track on here. This feels like a mutiny every round.

Also somebody said they were surprised by the love for Narcolepsy. I've been under the impression for nearly 2 decades that it's one of their best tracks ever. Would love to see it win.

IDK why man! I don't dislike anything heavily, just nothing ever caught me as well as this album. They had lightning in a bottle with the self-titled and I don't think they ever topped it.

Edit: I will however, listen to everything as this bracket makes progress and hopefully that'll change.

I love Blue and Out Of The Vein. Both incredibly fun albums that I have spent many summers listening to.

Yeah S/T seems like one of the most lightning-in-a-bottle releases I can think of. It's just a really, really good mainstream 90s alt-rock record... and to me, subsequent releases were not-so-exceptional efforts in that same territory (I haven't given anything since Vein a truly fair shake, though).

Although didn't Cadogan write a lot of the music for S/T and Blue before Jenkins pushed him out? That would explain a lot, too.

It was hard to not go for "I Want You" with "send me all your vampires" being one of my absolute favorite Jenkins-isms, but "Narcolepsy" was the first song from this band I heard that really made me fall in love with them beyond the hits

"God of Wine" is probably the better choice, but I have too strong a sentimental attachment to the school dance vibes of "How's It Going to Be?"

    This round was TOUGHHHHHHHH

Yes, Cadogan is/was a phenomenal guitarist and was taught by Satriani. I think his song structuring and general style of rock on this album is seriously underrated. Jenkins is a great frontman, but Cadogan made this album a masterpiece.

God of wine is definitely a better song. But hows it is my favorite song.

The Kevin Cadogan debate is always a good one because while he’s a fantastic guitar player and adds a lot to both 3EB and Blue he wasn’t a songwriter on their two biggest singles (jumper, semi-charmed life) or a fan favorite (motorcycle drive-by) so I think Jenkins deserves more credit than he receives from a lot of fans.

Also Out of the Vein fucking rules, so there’s that piece to the argument as well!

He didnt write on "Never Let You Go" either. I always thought the "Steven Jenkins can't write hooks" argument was absurd on albums like Out Of The Vein and this proves how absurd it is.

I'm not disagreeing at all on Jenkins being the hook writer. That's a definite given. I think it's also fair to say that those famous singles are also the simplest and most straightforward tracks on the album, instrumentally and lyrically. (That's not a knock against them either, I just think it's easy to tell the difference between who wrote what on the self-titled)

Ironically enough, cause I just looked it up, all my favorites from Blue are credited to Cadogan as well haha.

Good info here. Now that I look up the credits it further cements that Cadogan was probably essential to what drew me into their early stuff, though... "Jumper" and "Never Let You Go" are two of my least favorite on the first 2 LPs. "Narcolepsy," "Wounded," "Camouflage"... seems like the more intricate stuff that really caught my attention was attributed to Cadogan.

But OOtV still has some memorable stuff without him, so I give Jenkins his due.

Loving all the friendly, respectful debate in here! I gotta echo @Larry David opinion here that y’all are really missing out if you’ve only listened to the first three albums! Also, Out of the Vein is one of the great lost pop-rock records.

Can't believe the Background is gonna lose in the second round. Comes in second for me to Narcolepsy.

Also recounting all the times I cried to this album. Big sap.

When I had my first real breakup in high school, I listened to "The Background" on repeat for like 3 months. Teared up when I finally got to see it live last summer, not because of the breakup, but just at how much of an impact that song(and album) had on me growing up
