...Is a Real Boy Hebrews In Defense of the Genre Say Anything Oliver, Appropriate Anarchy, My Dear I Don't Think It Is
Switch Hebrews and In Defense for me but otherwise I also agree Ok so it's a Hebrews listen for me today then. It's been a minute
Ya I get that. Hebrews is better in the sense of being great front to back. In Defense I just have a special place for, warts and all.
yeah it's probably the hardest album I know of for me to accurately rate since I absolutely love so much of it but then there's some stuff I just never want to listen to. the best stuff on there is amazing though.
Hebrews isn't bad but they shot themselves in the foot with the no guitar thing. The songs themselves are interesting but there's no reason they couldn't break their own rule and just throw in the guitars where they're needed. Also, I hate returning to that one song where Max just repeats the word "swastika" a bunch--truly uncomfortable.
Idk, I think the no guitar thing probably helped push him creatively to try new things and I think it worked out super well. I've never listened to it and thought there was a moment that really needed guitars.
I’m surprised more people don’t like Rum, that song is a straight bop I still think the best song they’ve put out overall is Eloise, in another universe that is a hit single
I liked self titled at the time and Cemetery is maybe their best song but I never put it on these days. I also appreciate that it’s the only album where I feel like max was in a genuinely good headspace while writing it. In Defense is a perfect mess, only songs I would cut are Died a Jew and Retarded in Love, for obvious reasons.
I’ve listened to the new song again with a new headspace and with headphones. It’s actually in fact a good song. Unfortunately
Bad people can make good art. I don't have a strong opinion on this song, but that statement seems relevant
Self Titled …Is a Real Boy In Defense of the Genre Oliver Appropriate Hebrews Anarchy, My Dear I don’t think it is
People still thinking IARB holds up super well and is somehow less cringey than any of their other stuff is hilarious. Absolutely every single song of theirs is cringey with the lyrics in someway especially when you now know who Max is and where it's coming from. Self Titled is wonderful.
Yeah, self titled definitely has some cringey moments on different levels of cringe. “Crush’d” to me is “Rivers Cuomo” cringey. “Mara and Me” is “eye roll” cringey. “Property” is “don’t ever do that again” cringey. But I still love the album. Except I never feel great listening to “Property” for obvious reasons.
