I've at least liked every album until IDTII and I'm still excited for whatever the next Say Anything album is as long as it isn't just another IDTII. I've also wanted to see this band since like 2008 but with some of the videos I've seen over the last few years along with hearing people's experiences I'm not so sure about it anymore, ha.
When I saw the original IDOTG/ST lineup right around the time s/t was getting released it was an incredible performance. Then I saw him on a solo tour right before Anarchy, and it was also pretty good. Overall seeing the recent slip ups of his live show it's really bizarre. I definitely feel for people at that one show in particular where he was sloshed, and mumbling lyrics.
Thinking about it, maybe it would help if Max doesn't have song shop going on when he is writing/recording the next SA album.
Jeez I had no idea about his reputation for being wasted on stage. Just watched a video of him attempting to play I Want to Know Your Plans and you can see him puking, holding it in and swallowing it until it all just comes out. What the fuck man.
He references the incident on "Wire Mom", one of the better songs on "I Don't Think It Is". My eyes are crossed, my will is lost and I’m wasted Every queasy thought I’ve had is inflated I puke onstage and slip, face plant and I’m faced with The acid reflux remains of subjective truth
listening to in defense of for the first time ever. Needs to be a single (longer) album (not a double LP) with most of the slower songs removed and it'd be golden
Sounds like a tour with Say Anything, Bayside, and Reggie & the Full Effect/Hot Rod Circuit (on select dates) is coming
I can't speak to whether or not he has real issues with booze but I do know his pre-show ritual is to drink tequila and red bull. he blamed the more famous incident on not eating enough before the show and then getting a little too fucked up with the ritual. can't defend it tho, he has a responsibility to the people that paid to see him, and the part that pisses me off is that he never even apologized for that, just kinda brushed it off
i'd love to hear their entire new album played live. it would sound so much better than the actual album does. there's some gems on there.
Re listened to Anarchy today. Really cool moments here, and there. It's a shame the production is lacking, and some of the song structures/lyrics are boring. I actually really enjoy the back half. Overbiter onwards is neat. Of Steel has grown on me a lot. Overall it should have been a ep of: Nights Song Peace Out Overbiter Of Steel The Stephen Hawking
Gonna re visit Hebrews soon. Which imo is a stronger album, but still lacking. No album has amazed me since s/t.
Good to see some love for Of Steel. Love Max's chorus vocals. Still love Hebrews. Might be my second fav SA album.
Of Steel is great. Not a fan of Peace Out at all. Hebrews is my second favorite SA album just because of how bloated IDOTG is.
Max being drunk on stage was a very rare thing. I've seen SA about 10 times in NJ/NYC and Max is always so pumped, grateful and puts on an amazing show. I just hope he goes back to trying to be melodic/catchy or punky and coherent, the last album just wasn't for me and I have found reasons to really dig everything else. Say Anything use to be my favorite band, I hope that swings back around but there'd need to be a refocus on him trying to sing and sound pleasant again instead of like a screaming meat grinder.
Listening to Anarchy, My Dear right now. This album has a lot of sentimental value to me. Peace Out makes me (more) emotional (than I already am).
I'm probably an outlier that only likes Is A Real Boy and Hebrews. But while I really like the songs on Hebrews, the awful synth strings ruins it. So I love Is A Real Boy.. and theoretically love Hebrews, I guess.
