"hi i'm max, i used to play in a band called say anything, which was arguably just me, so it doesn't matter that we broke up" man i fuckin hate this guy so much lol
It's just so sad. I saw him play solo acoustic in 2004 (I think? Straylight/Hot Rod/Northstar tour). Those earlier days were so much fun... Thennnnnn years later I saw the full band play in their stupid white tshirt costumes with Angels and Airwaves and goddamn was it pretty bad.
Every time I saw them, and his solo they were great. Esp the s/t tour with MM, and Eisley. Where they were wearing all white.
Tho I assumed this would at least have drums. Seems strange he’s just charging for acoustic. A lot of bands been doing full band performances through zoom as of late.
Oof I couldn't even finish Belt. I was just listening while I worked, and it felt like he couldn't even keep tempo. Was that him, or was the recording of the stream lagging and jumping?
There's plenty of worthy criticisms to be made, but hanging out itt just to be annoyed seems weird to me. Idk.
Max has always had a self-deprecating humor. He's been pretty blunt since that letter that he feels kind of dumb "breaking up" SA and essentially admitting he knows he'll end up rebooting it one day anyway.
Has any former member of SA (like from the 05-13) lineup said anything negative about Max? I think I saw them 6-7 times during that era and they band was always really great. Max had better nights than some, but really seemed to be into it for the most part and the band was tight.
I was a huge Say Anything fan, well the first handful of albums. Max just irks me these days, I honestly can't pinpoint it. I just feel like i've read a bunch of arrogant statements by him the past 5 or so years. I guess it's possible they are tongue in cheek but he just comes off as a douchebag. I absolutely adore Sherri though.
To me they peaked with the self-titled album - not musically per se, but trajectory-wise. IARB and IDOTG were both great, Max seemed to finally have his shit together, and they were exploring their poppier sound, reaching a wider audience, popular musicians loved the guy and joined in on the fun at every opportunity... And then Anarchy, My Dear hit the floor with a resounding thud, and its been mostly hit-or-miss nonsense since then. It's a serious shame, guy is a great writer but can't seem to get out of his own way.
