I'm getting my hopes up wayyy too high that this is going to be released tomorrow. But I mean... if he announced the label switch and now premiered a new song, it'd make sense to release it while he has people's attention.
it's just such a weird comparison. especially because iarb is such a time and place record that i don't think max could replicate if he even tried. i don't think he would want to even do that. it's definitely a hype thing to pull people back in
i'm hoping it means less complicated arrangements with a focus on the vocals/guitar, haven't listened to the live vid yet. i would be very in for a back-to-basics approach with a focus on songwriting
One of the most baffling things that have happened in music imo is how Max tried to hype Anarchy My Dear as having the punk energy of IARB, but really it's easily their lowest energy album. I like it, it just did not match what he described at all
Yeah I think Max overhyping that album really led to a lot of the negative reactions to it. Divorced from those statements, Anarchy is not a bad record overall, but because people had their sky-high expectations let down (expectations that Max created, not the fans) it was a bigger disappointment than it would have been otherwise. Still some really great songs that I adore on it.
I guess today's hype for me is Say Anything, time to jump around the ol' discog all day. We've had teases for four major records this week (The Early November, Say Anything, The 1975, Panic! at the Disco), it's been a bit too much to bear.
Yea agreed. I listened to it yesterday (prompted by the death of Stephen Hawking) and i really do like the album a lot. I think it's a pretty cool, laid back version of Say Anything, and it has some absolute gems (especially Burn a Miracle, Night's Song, So Good, the Stephen Hawking). I think he meant more the themes of the album than the musical style, but that wasn't communicated clearly and led to some confusion.
Overbiter is an underrated tune as well. Love when Sherri comes in with the "Say you will say say you will right now"
juxtaposed with Sherri, no less. gives me chills. i distinctly remember disliking that one on release, no idea what i was thinking!
no, i'm right there with you. i might even place it above s/t as my second fav. it just had a couple duds for me, still kinda does, but i love it overall and while i'll skip some songs that come up on shuffle, i never skip when listening straight through
oddly i find myself loving s/t a little less as time goes on, though Mara & Me is great and Ahh... Men is a top 10 max song for me probably. Slumming It With Johnny is also one of my fav b-sides by any band period
I don't know what you were thinking either. I love how brutally honest Max is on it too. Just accepting like hey I'm going to do my thing no matter what people say, it's just the way things work out. One of Say Anything's best songs ever, ironically. There's a cemetery deep below the sea, there're the spaces reserved for [geniuses] like [us].
I'm always really happy that public opinion turned around on S/T. I remember that thing got a ton of hate when it came out.
really? i remember it getting a pretty warm reception haha. but AP.net was really my only measuring stick
I remember seeing a lot of people calling it "too polished" and "overproduced" and stuff. Now, ironically, everyone is saying "MOAR POLISH PLZ MAX" after IDTII haha
