About every three or four months, I try revisiting IDTII and I'm afraid it's still Very Bad™, but I do think Two Tongues Two is actually Pretty Good™
The production is still shit but I think the songwriting is pretty interesting (which seems to be the main draw to IDTII) so I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot. There are a few clunkers in the middle, but it's a strange, interesting album. Shameless self-plug, here's my review: Two Tongues - Two Tongues Two • chorus.fm
hell yeah I'm at work and this thread actually reminded me that I've been meaning to revisit it too so that's going on after Kurt Vile haha
I can't get into TTT at all. I have tried over and over but to me it is just so awful. Which makes me super sad because I adore the first Two Tongues album.
I don't love it. But Attaboy, Jiminy and 17 coked up and speeding aren't that bad. With TTT it is almost painful for me to listen all the way through. And I am huge a Say Anything and Saves the Day fan.
Damn, I basically feel the exact opposite, haha. At least with Max/SA, it seems like there's something out there for everyone!
Hah, the best part about listening to Two Tongues for me is the fact that ever since learning "Wowee Zowee" was about each other and not a love song, I basically hear any love song they write as about each other rather than their respective partners. Puts a huge smile on my face. Gotta love the admiration they have for each other as musicians and friends. edit: and if I'm being honest, even with the shit production, "Scorpio" (and TTT in general) does the whole "garage-rock" thing Max has been talk about for the past two and a half years better than anything else he's worked on in that time. edit 2: fuck "Black Hole" is so weird and I love it. Legit sounds like a cover of a Sigur Ros song or something. Definitely interested in hearing your thoughts @CoffeeEyes17
Mara and Me is the most epic song for it's short length. Prolly my fav one right next to We Killed It and Plea
i love how many styles that song goes through, its so odd and feels like Max had like 3-4 ideas for 3-4 songs but instead mashed them together for Mara and Me. its fantastic @Aaron Mook this 2nd TT record is so weird that i actually really like it. Bateman and Barcelona are great, Azaela sounds like it couldve been on IDTII, and Black Hole is so.....odd that i cant help but appreciate it. im shocked at how much i enjoyed that
U.S. And Scorpio are probably my favorite from Two Tongues two but the album never grew on me like I hoped it would. The first album I still revisit more. Also I'm glad to see all of the I Don't Think It Is love I feel like when it first came our everybody crapped on it
Maybe I'm reading too far into some of the lyrics, but I always got a Pinkerton vibe of Max purposefully presenting himself as a cruddy person (or at least someone who struggles with cruddy thoughts). I think he's always pirtrayed himself as a flawed antihero sort if figure, so a lot of that stuff doesn't bother me. Some lines ("Died a Jew," holy crap. "Hebrews" makes almost the same mistake but it feels self-defacing ti me, as though he's saying he has it easier than a person of color but still feels just as persecuted, though that might be a misinterpretation.) are rather questionable or naive at points, though.
i mean yeah thats always been part of the charm of Max but that doesnt make it any less hard to hear sometimes. hes definitely naive, hell he still is even in his older age, but i dont think any of it comes from a place of hatred or bigotry.
He makes cringeworthy lines sometimes, but to accuse Max of being racist or mysogynist is pretty outrageous. There's a line between saying stuff that's deliberately meant to offend and having thoughts in your brain. Wanting everyone to be a certain way is a more dishonest way than anything, which in my opinion takes away from art/honesty. I'm by no means an anti-pc person, I think people think before they say things. As far as Max, give me what's going on in people's brains through art rather than water down version of niceties is much more desirable. Just my opinion it's a good discussion that I haven't fully thought/debated out yet.
I feel like our generation is a parental advisory sticker on steroids now.. before it was "warning, this contains inappropriate content for underage consumers" to "warning, this contains cringe-worthy , offensive lyrics and this artist Needs to be taught which words he should and shouldn't use so that he doesn't offend potential listeners, even and especially at the cost of creative freedom. People's feelings > artistic expression."
Lol I haven't accused him of being racist or sexist and I'm not trying to censor him or w/e y'all relax.
Yeah just discussing what you dislike about a few songs doesn't mean anyone's trying to stifle artistic expression, haha.
Totally agree. The opening couplet that ends with "Molly Connolly just broke up with me over the revealing nature of the songs" into the next verse and the absolutely hysterical way he's yelling "I'll kill myself" at the end of the song definitely hang a lampshade on the idea that the song's a self-effacing parody of "personal" songwriting while also feeding into the album's original planned overarching rock album concept of a man who can't help but sing what's on his mind.
