I never saw that line as offensive. He isn’t saying “we had it worse,” just that they also indeed had it bad. That’s one of my least favorite Say Anything songs (along with “Young, Dumb, and Stung” and “Death For My Birthday.”), but I've never seen it as offensive. Just dumb. Just my take on it.
I love Death For My Birthday but that's because I was an angsty teenager going through a bad breakup at the time I heard it heh.
Guy released a song over a decade ago with a chorus of “I called her on the phone and she touched herself” If you’re getting offended now, one has to wonder what you thought you were listening to all along
Even as someone who enjoys parts of this album, I wholeheartedly disagree with this and think you're understating the album's content by conflating the reactions of some LGBTQ+ folk with "getting offended." There is a history of violence and oppression there; those reactions are completely justified. As for "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too," which I feel has already been widely discussed in this context already...attitudes change with time. It's not an excuse, but an explanation. Max has spoken about the song and removed it from his live show. A 15-year-old lyric is completely different than a violent and questionable album narrative from someone who seems genuine in wanting to promote progressive values.
When did he stop playing Wow I Can Get Sexual Too? Pretty sure they played it when I saw them at the 10 year IARB reunion tour a couple years ago
I caught that tour too, would've been 2015. This was 2017. Say Anything to Retire “Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too” From Live Show • forum.chorus.fm
Whoa, it's a real weird feeling when you actually pay attention to lyrics of "The Hardest" and then hear his kid. Thanks to whoever pointed that out on here.
equating the two is extremely gross but I shouldn't be surprised to see another post like this from you
As a lesbian who is very open with my sexuality, I love this album. (I may be biased though as I have a say anything tattoo on my arm for the rest of my life). But seriously- I sat on Friday night and read the lyrics while listening along and got really emotional. I think it’s raw and honest and one of the best things Max has done in a while.
Does anyone know what the status is for song shop? My wife and I bought a song last April and haven't heard anything... We bought one back in 2010 and got the song back within a few months. The easy and obvious answer is that maybe he's been busy with this new album, but if anyone else bought a song around that time, let me know if you got it! I also know he explained his current state and how this was the last SA album (If I'm remembering correctly), so I don't want to bug asking where the song is...
There's an order status on his website maybe try there and see what is says. I've never gotten one though but it seems like the time it takes varies widely
Thanks for the suggestion - it has said the same thing the whole time - that the description has been received. Maybe I'll keep waiting.
I did just re-read "A Goodbye Summation," posted on the Eisley website. He mentioned after the album he will be back to song shop, so I will wait ....no problem. On that note there are a lot of discussions about the album and about how some think that Max holds the same beliefs as the fictitious character he is playing on the album. I would encourage people to read that piece on Eisley's site, where he is very open about the character Oliver. It's interesting when people say they believe Max may share some of the same traits/opinions/values as Oliver.... Take a look at other works of fiction. It is purposely not true. To me, this is why the band has always been good - they have always been different.
I feel like I was more willing to try or listen to the concept a few months back but having never apologized and blocking trans people for saying transphobic stuff on top of the other weirdly homophobic stuff he’s been saying. I do think it’s incredibly likely that a lot of it is him really needing rove work through stuff, but I don’t think thy should entail saying harmful shit that isn’t fully given context (with both twit longs and within the album concept) on a large platform. He’s been doing this long enough. I do hope that, with the time off from say anything, he leans into a interpersonal support system for the benefit of himself and also others. Long posts that are hard to understand to people that don’t know him trying to offer a response that can’t properlu suffice isn’t healthy for everyone. And while creating art can be a way to cope, sometimes, especially when doing it for a job, it can be just as much of a way to self destruct. With that said, I completely understand that people have been able to find things they connect to, or have different contexts and experiences. I appreciate that mostly everyone here has been able to have this conversation regardless of if they’re listening
