We had a draft on this site a few weeks ago and Cemetery won so obviously a lot of people feel like it's their best song, me included.
“cemetery” is indeed better than all of those songs sorry for stirring this up i guess???? but imo there is unexamined gross shit behind the “correlation” that the appearance of sherri = this band getting less interesting
Happy Max. Full stop. Your enjoyment of someone’s music means fuck all in comparison to their mental health.
What the actual eff. Plenty of happy artists put out their best records while in that state. Please see "A Black Mile to the Surface"
I'm not saying it can't happen. But has he put out his best records when in that state? I love that Manchester Orchestra album. What I'm saying is his music has been absolute shit. Max Bemis and the Painful Splits? Now that is garbage. His 2nd Two Tongues album is probably the worst thing he's ever been a part of. From an artistic standpoint. When you listen to the music, there's a clear difference in quality. I'm not wishing him unwell.
but i'm also pretty sure it's good? really loving "mouth breather" and "when i'm acid." i'm not too bothered by "greased," it feels like a transitional, pastoral interlude on a prog rock record or something (even though it's significantly longer than a lot of the other songs on this album lol)
after one listen i think i agree with everyone saying this is his best since the s/t, and i love hebrews. lot of cool stuff going on in this record even though the short song lengths and the foregrounding of acoustic guitars give it the quality of the sketch (which i like!)
After a few listens, I can confidently say that this is my least favorite SA album. I only see myself coming back to two, maybe three songs years from now. SA is one of those bands though where my least favorite is still a good record/doesn’t mean i don’t like it. It just doesn’t grip me like the others albums do. Kinda feels like a few songs With a bunch of interludes.
Did you guys read that manifesto? He hasn't exactly been Happy Max. Glad his family is healthy and happy though. I've kind of been an ass being critical of him, but I really hope the kickstarter works out, he can make a living and be awesome. I no longer relate to the band, but it's been the most significant band for me in my lifetime. I listened to the album. I mean, it's listenable which is a ton more than I can say of IDTII but the bare bones thing is a little grating. I'm a dick for just wanting IARB 2, but just the way the melodies and guitars work together in those albums can't emotionally be matched by too many artists, ever. In 5 years, I think the time of caring about his music will pass so I just hope he transitions to the next stage of life alright.
I feel like Max’s fanbase would still be strong in 5 years even if he disappeared. There’s fans who love every single thing he releases. IDTII, Painful Splits, Two Tongues Two, song shop songs, and even his recent “solo” release are all divisive, but there are people who worship all of it. Although if somehow those people just up and disappeared, Max also has a rather successful comics career going. He’s working with Marvel and independent publishers, totally getting the best of both worlds. Dude’s just about to wrap up a run on Moon Knight. I think he’ll be just fine. :)
This album is growing on me a a lot. Also, I read on Reddit that Sherri apparently posted that they are no longer selling their house. Wasn’t that one of their main reasons for the Kickstarter? So now they’ve raised WAY more than their goal and they aren’t even buying a house?
Just listened to the album. Holy crap, I had some extremely strong first impressions. I just kind of sat and stared throughout the spoken word ending on “Sediment,” and fully zoned out on the pretty ending melody. And now I’m just sitting in silence typing about it, ha. Damn, that was good.
I just pulled up their page on realtor.com. Their house was listed 9/1, dropped $10k in value, and got delisted recently. Weird. Looks like their property value has been dropping for awhile. I wonder if that’s just the trend in their neighborhood. ...I have a lot of thoughts on this because I spent much of the past year planning and buying my first house, haha.
