Say Anything - Oliver Appropriate (January 25, 2019) Album • Page 19

  1. Daze is really, really good

  2. One thing that I have to say about their catalog, as divisive as their later records are and despite how often Max cites ...IARB as a reference point, is that I don't think he's ever gone out of his way to actually emulate it. Every SA album has its own distinctive feel and Max is consistently one of the most creative and true-to-himself songwriters in the scene, even when it polarizes fans or critics. He's never seemed preoccupied with adhering to a certain formula, even when they were writing their poppiest record.

Is this manifesto thing they're shipping with the record just a print out of that whole goodbye novella or something else? i dont doubt that max has more words in him...

one thing i'll say about max and IARB is that, from what i can tell, he does genuinely like that record and his insistence on comparing everything hes done since to it at one point or another comes from him knowing he set a high bar for himself and striving to meet that goal, even if he does come up short. you see a lot of bands resent their early work when fans constantly regard it as their high mark and, while im sure its been frustrating for max, it definitely seems like he still has a lot of love for that album.

i would really enjoy some sort of plot summary or supplemental short story-esque write up about the concept.

its the best song hes written since the self titled. and it could go toe to toe with a lot of stuff on self titled.

    I don't think it's the goodbye summation I think it's something else. It's only 3 pages too so it's a different length

I'm just surprised and sorely disappointed that no comic book was given.

I'm really not surprised. Just because he writes for comics now sometimes doesn't mean he's going to tie all his projects together.

  10. Yeah, he's mentioned before that although the crossover appeal is always nice, he likes that his two careers don't have to lean on each other to exist

  11. sad that IDOTG is not on apple music. also, I've owned it personally for years and years and it's part of my library from that but it still won't let me play anything besides the singles--everything else is present but greyed out and unplayable from my library

Always liked Say Anything but they popped up on shuffle and suddenly clicked in a big way, so I've been deep-diving into their entire discography.

Honestly, self-titled is pretty underrated. Obviously IARB and IDOTG are full of gems, but have their fair share of tracks that fall short. Conversely, SA is probably their most consistent record give or take a few tracks.

That being said, the first two records have a raw energy that doesn't shine through as much on SA, so I understand why they're so highly regarded.

AMD is probably my least favourite. But a few tracks on that record are among SA's greatest. Overbiter and So Good are well... so good.

I actually really enjoy Hebrews. It's not without its flaws (ie. production can get pretty gross), but what a creative and original take on a punk/emo record! When it hits, it hits hard (see: Judas Decapitation and Nibble Nibble).

For obvious reasons, IDTII hasn't quite sunk in. Did like Wire Mom tho.

Loving Daze. Super excited for the new record. Won't get the chance to see them live which is impossibly lame because they're on track to fill the Brand New-sized hole in my heart. Oh well.

  15. had a fun time revisiting a bunch of my favorite SA songs. It's been a long time!

might try Hebrews again one of these days, I think I only really listened to it a few times ever. unfortunately I think I'll never like Anarchy (sans Night's Song) or IDTII.

i hate to spark any potential hate for IDTII, but does everyone genuinely hate the songs themselves? i can get that the production is a big issue, as it sounds like (and pretty much was) a garage band recording in their garage. but i actually really enjoy the songs themselves, and to say it doesn't have energy like the first two albums... i mean, max is pretty much screaming the whole time (i know, his more clean takes are missed.) the songs themselves are experimental, 17 coked up and speeding has a math rock climax into post hardcore outro. rum and goshua have hip hop influences and attaboy is while silly at times, kind of a prog rock song.

i personally feel like the songs are good, just the mixing of the album is more of an acquired taste. it's very raw and lo-fi, and kind of bad on purpose. just curious if you guys think you would like the album more if it had say, more similar production to the first three albums.

Not saying you are wrong, I am genuinely curious- which tracks on IRAB fall short for you? Cause that is one of the few CDs where every song in perfect for me. definitely agree about the S/T. My second favorite, easily.

I do think it suffers from the same problem Two Tongues Two does: good songs buried in bad production. There's a fundamental problem with saying "let's change the production style" because at that point the songs are no longer those same songs, if you know what I mean, so I can't say whether or not I'd like them better or not. I have no idea what they'd change or what would bring out the "old style" and that could cut verses, bridges, add different effects and such.

I kind of just take it as what it is and move on because ultimately that's how Max wants those songs to exist and I don't like them that way.

Sorry if that doesn't make any sense to anyone. It's hard to explain my thought process.

IDTII could have the best production in the world and I'd still hate it. It just also sounds like shit. I honestly don't find any aspect of that album better than bad.

I mean, if you don't like the content of the songs themselves lyrically and such I can totally see where you're coming from.

The surprise drop might not have sold well, so he might not have the bargaining power for how it’s to be promoted this time around.
