i never cared for IARB or in defense of the genre. self titled is a masterpiece though.

 

in defense is an actively bad album that anyone only remembers because gerard way and hayley williams ended up on it.

 

The thing about IDOTG is it was still cute and fun, when you listen to it, Max still has charm.

Ecstasy, Church Channel, Shiksa, Blur, About Falling are legitimately awesome/enjoyable songs to me. Shrug.

Pretty sure Taking Back Sunday also took a shot at KOL on a song around that time.

 

At 30, In Defense has a lot more skips than it did for me at 20, but I’d still rank it in my top 3 for the band.

 

IDOTG was good, just bloated. There's probably 1 1/2 good discs in that record.

 

S/T is the only SA album I really got into. In Defense was cool just because of the novelty of a double album in that era.

 

If In Defense was just a long single disc album like some of those early Coheed records I think it would have aged better. Died a Jew, R In Love, and a handful of others could be wiped from existence and I think it would be a better album. But the “if in defense was shorter it’d be as loved as IARB” argument has been done to death since the absolutepunk days so I won’t ramble more. Haha

 

S/T would have been an absolutely perfect record for me if the property > stung > birthday run was replaced.

 

IDOTG is a good album for About Falling alone

 

listening to IDOTG for the first time in full and i fucking love this so far. i didn't really like what i heard when i was 18 but i get it now.

 

just got to it now and yeah, this is great.

 

- crazy how good Max (and the band) sounds here
- everyone looks so young
- how many people have performed in this band?

 

I mean that was their main line up post IARB-Anarchy

 

It's even better acoustic but then you'd have to put up with Max's face searching for it on Youtube

The verses are really fun to play on guitar heh

 

It sucks that SA and BN were my most covered bands whose songs I spent a lot of time learning, god damn it. It has made my high school/college YouTube channel very problematic lmao.

 

Defense is mostly bad with maybe 6 saveable songs

 

thats very fair, those songs are just so good that it makes the rest of the album worth it because the rest isn't *bad*, it's just painfully mediocre

 

i really liked it except the intro to spay me. an insult to the dead and we killed it blew my mind.

 

I’ve always loved the original acoustic video of Max playing That is Why before it became a bitter break up song

 

My Say Anything fandom peeked summer of 07 watching a version of that performance and about falling from the same show on repeat. I was so excited for IDOTG, which I actually like for what it is despite having no real desire to listen to the band for quite some time

 

This is even funnier with the recent revelation that his favorite band of all time is Jet

 

Are we sure it was Max who wrote that part? He said his wife so I’m assumed it was someone else

 

Listened to some of In Defense today, I don't think it's bad just idk.. meandering? Isn't grabbing me
