Listening to early Say Anything recently makes me miss young Max. Dude would write some really corny stuff and yet have it come off as earnest and likeable. Nowadays all he writes is edge lord bullshit and doubles down on whatever people hate just to be an annoying try hard.
I'm suddenly remembering he got to write for Marvel at some point, which is a wild crossover. How did he end up with this project back then and how was it, if anyone on here reads comics?
yeah he had a Moon Knight run which iirc was pretty universally reviled even back then. I'm a huge fan of that character and even I swerved reading the Bemis run because of the things I heard about it. in retrospect giving this guy free reign to write a run of a character who, at his worst already perpetrated some pretty questionable DID stereotypes, is like giving the drunkest guy at the party your keys
As someone who always wondered what broadcasting my own manic episodes would look like I now know that the entertainment value I think they would have are way less interesting than how it feels they would be, and extremely painful to watch in real time. Pardon my meanness, but Max's delusions err way more on the side of child-like with adult words than prophetic or interesting. I just think it's fuckin sad he doesn't have anyone he can trust that can check him and tell him what will go over well and what will not before releasing it publicly under the Say Anything moniker. Just call it Maxim Mental and it makes sense in a way, but butchering the Say Anything brand sucks. He knows he's getting attention and believes that a hundred people still telling him this stuff is genius and others don't "get it" is reinforcing while the rest of us are legitimately either concerned or embarrassed for him.
Apparently the potential income stream outweighs the effects on his personal and emotional wellbeing. It's sad that the industry will turn a blind eye to this kind of self-harm (I know, I know, it's nothing new and this has been going on as long as there have been paid artists. That doesn't make it less concerning). I hate this timeline, I hate that Max has chosen this path, I hate what this must be doing to the rest of his family.
I realize the situation is sad and hard to step away from, but I think giving this spectacle attention is what’s perpetuating it. Just simply walk away and don’t look back. It’s surprising to me that this thread is still being posted in daily when it seems all that’s being discussed is how bad it all is.
Eh...I get it, but I think people are processing an uncomfortable situation involving someone whose music was formative to them along with other likeminded people. I feel that is a function this forum is fit for, personally
That’s fine for the time being... But it’s been a downward slope for a while now. Everyone draws their own line in the sand, I suppose, but eventually we all should probably let go.
Was Max dropped from Dine Alone? I noticed these are all being released under Rory, which I thought was dead. That and the ai art makes me think Max doesn’t actually have anyone backing this. I am pretty confident if I started posting things like Max does online, multiple people in my life would step in to stop me. It’s just very strange seeing someone established in their minor celebrity status continuing to overshare to this degree.
I'm guessing he just signed a deal with Dine Alone on just the releases they have on the site, rather than being bound to a contract on all future music releases. They still have a ton of stuff available. Part of me is tempted to purchase what I don't already have and complete the entire Say Anything discography on vinyl, including the records that aren't great. I made it 51 seconds before I could even get to anything about the Used lol I despise my morbid curiosity for even listening to any of it
One of the other songs has a lyric about his daughter being "shat out of a vag" and it was honestly one of the worst thing I've ever heard in a song.
