Max doesn't even sing for almost the entire first minute of Molly, and when he does come in, you wish he just let the crowd handle the whole song. Dude sounds like he belongs in one of those anti-smoking ads I'd see on Cartoon Network as a kid.
Max isn't a complex singer and these songs are not hard to sing it all. Makes so sense at all. Just sing your own damn songs.
If I heard, just as examples, Anthony Green or Hayley Williams struggling this much, it would make some level of sense. They write shit that is hard to perform and regularly pushes the limits of their range. Having an off show, or even tour, makes sense now and then (though I think both tend to be fantastic live). But with Max, yeah, anyone can sing along to these songs, so why is the dude who wrote them struggling this bad? I knew the next Say Anything release would be baffling regardless but I did not think it would be the ONE fairly respected album the band has getting absolutely shit on by modern Max.
Was it the clip that's been going around where he tells the crowd to sing the first verse so he can vape? :edit: I see it's already been posted
He probably could have hired a 15 year old with garageband to make it sound not bad. Or a 39 year old that posts way too much on chorus and would gladly have done it, lol.
Semi-unrelated, but listening to the second of the mewithoutYou live albums right now and goddamn this is how you do a live album. Impossible bar to hit but can’t believe how much lower quality the Say Anything one is.
This is the most recently divorced release I’ve ever seen. Bad covers with a weird title that calls back to the album most people care about in a completely meaningless way.
i jokingly thought to myself that it'd be funny if my girls was a horrendous animal collective cover so i had to skim it to find out and...it is lmao
It’s almost like he knows people hate this version of SA and is trying to destroy its legacy. I have no other explanation.
Yea the mind boggling thing is that the instrumentation is fine and he could easily sing as well or comparable as he does on IDOTG, so obviously it's a choice of I know my fans don't like this but I like it and they should like it anyway. I'd love to see him actually explain it and address it. He just seemed so self aware of his own music when he was young, and now, like just weird. I mean, if it's the music he wants to make more power to him, just kinda wish he left the "Say Anything" brand to itself and its melodic cuteness so to speak. Did this stuff under Maxim Mental and didn't mix the two.
Weird that these are covers but he has his name as the songwriter in Spotify. The last song is a Strokes cover, who does the other two originally? Also I couldnt listen to more than 20 seconds of each song before turning them off
