I said I was gonna keep quiet on this one and I probably still will, but now that it's out there, I will say...singing about being accused of rape is...a choice
Track one nonetheless. Jason posted the lyrics earlier in the thread, but to recap: "Wondering where’s your Beem-Dawg Snuggled up tight in the guts of your pod Kanye, Marvel, Break-Up, Sherri flipped her lid Her sister tried to take my kids No, fuck that, her husband did Accused me of rape so I shattered four iPhones in a row There’s proof in my liver, so now like Rivers I’ve got to get right back to The Good Life Sing 'You and All Your Friends' Take up knives, it’s war again"
I don't really understand the angle of airing stuff like that over new music when you already know there is a rabid parasocial community waiting to eat you alive. I know he's been really inspired by hip-hop over the past 10 years, but turning your familial issues into some kind of bizarre public emo beef (that no one else is actually partaking in) is probably not the route I would take. Pretty sure most folks that listen to this will digest that verse and the CPS song where he cries as either some kind of radical honesty or extremely concerning oversharing.
Something about Max's overall attitude towards life always resonated with me and helped me discover my own Bipolar Disorder for what it was. I've probably written more criticism as anyone about him, yet I really do underneath it all root for him to be a tad self aware and try to restore himself to an admirable light. It's just that effect where if he hears any criticism he just dives deeper into the need of being criticized more. It's wildly odd there's no one that can tell Max, "dude no one wants to hear this shit publicly." I put out things and I've had my best friend even recently like overall this is decent but this part NO THIS FUCKIN SUCKS. So it sucks he has no one to give him leveled advice he's willing to listen to. Like, the new album would be fine with some mediocre lyrics and we'd all listen to it and eat it up. But he just can't. He's more interested in pissing off his critics than pleasing himself or his fans, and that's sad and way too common these days. He had a dating/sex life his whole time as an artist, we never knew the details, we didn't want to know then, we don't now. The reason why Molly Connolly works for so many people is it can mean so many things and types of relationships that are relatable, the reason these songs don't work is because it has us visualizing Max and Sheri and shit I don't want that image lol.
The fact that CPS was called and multiple relatives tried to obtain custody of the kids is…very concerning, especially when you see how the kids are living every day. That is also something I would not be sharing on a song. Same with being accused of rape. I hope Max’s victims are doing okay throughout this.
Just listened. It is bad. You really don’t have to bother. Lots about dicks and cum. Goes on a rant about Blink182, Jimmy Eat World, mewithoutyou, touche Amore after sobbing in a song. Musically interesting. Lyrically awful.
I wasn’t even going to listen but ended up going through it this morning. It's BAD, and it’s not just the lyrics. Even when there’s a solid idea, the execution is just so sloppy. It was particularly grating (and telling) to hear him quip about what his fans want. That said, the lyrics are the worst part. They’re gross and really fucking embarrassing.
The thing is, this first song *almost* works with its lyrics about how it’s like intentionally self-indulgent and we shouldn’t take any of this that seriously and should just “be kids again”. Then this verse takes it WAY too far and it’s impossible to actually engage with.
I thought the first song was actually kind of decent until that part, and then it’s all downhill from there.
lol lmao so the opening track of this album really tries to introduce this idea that “the mask is finally off” and Oliver is and has always been something Max hides behind but that he as an artist deserves the space to be petty and childish as a forewarning for the content of the rest of the album. I gotta say I mad respect this approach compared to the Oliver Appropriate thing where he was working out his feelings about being so conflicted about being attracted to men he might kill one if they rejected him (a real cause of a lot of historic violence against gay men that hit close to home) Anyways we’ll see if this is enough for me to love this band again.
I actually thought the end of Woman Song was kind of clever and funny and then it went on for way too long.
I can’t even make it through this first song lmao this sounds bad!! I wish I liked it tbh but I don’t
Love this in a similar way that I love ITDII which is with caution tape and mental hazard signs. Him making fun of t swift delivery on the beginning of SAY ANYTHING COLLECTIVELY made me gut laugh at the gym
Weatherbox influence on this album really elevate this band into spaces they’ve never been in before sonically.
The first song could’ve been interesting and yeah he just can’t help himself with that absolutely unhinged ending
