It’s a shame he’s gone off the rails lyrically because musically this is such a return to form and solid direction forward for the band, but the replay value is nil
Imagine next month when the album drops - it’s the same musically - but all the lyrics on every track are different, actually clever, funny, not horrifying, etc. and the joke all along was fucking with everyone during pre-release. That has to be what’s happening. This has to be part of the joke. I figured it out.
I said this earlier and like 2003 Max would totally do this. This guy? I don't think he's got it in him. Even if he hears the response and then decides to, ugh, man I'd go nuts for a slightly functional Max and return to form. Like that family member who use to be fun to be around but just can never get their act together.
I mean its odd but if the kids can read, write well and do some arithmetic it shouldn't be that big of a deal. I don't know. I certainly think it's a bad idea, but who am I to judge.
I think it’s more the “unschooling” combined with the troubling erratic behavior/unstable mental health issues that Max/Sheri have documented in interviews/on their social media the last few years. Kids need some sort of structured environment to thrive as they grow up. Public school absolutely sucks so I totally get exploring alternative methods of learning, but given Max/Sheri very public issues I get why fans/the public would be skeptical. This piece reads like a press release so it’s really hard to get anything out of it. It’s all surface level fluff with very little substance.
Yea this is why I see the negative reactions to the article to be not okay either. It's not really saying anything terrible there.
This theory reminds me of when Green Day fans all theorized that FOAM was a fake album and that their real album would be coming out shortly after. Eye roll emoji. Send.
I think I like these songs more than most of ya. Lots of weird parts and things that make me uncomfortable, but there’s also been some bangers. Like “Carrie and Lowell and Cody(Pendant).” I really like that one. Not a single mention of cum in that one, I don’t think. Whew.
I can't really unknow what I know about this band and rectify that with my own experiences with them, so it would be tough for me to judge this record even if it was a total knockout of a cumback. So I'm staying pretty mum on the whole thing. But yes, the rest of the record is very much like the singles and if you don't mind the lyrics, you probably won't be shaken by anything else (Jason posted one of the more glaring moments from the opening track earlier in the thread). If you're struggling with the lyrics so far, or the music, or the production...it's not gonna get better for you.
I’ll tell you one thing this is not the life I imagined max bemis would be living back in 2009 when I discovered this band
Remember when edgy was a song about people falling in love during the holocaust. Dude went from visionary to this?
I think Max has completely forgot what people actually liked about Say Anything. Yes their songs always had off kilter twists, and some odd lyrics here and there, but the songs always felt like they had some merit, and structure. These songs are just gross with none of the pay off.
I don’t know how to describe what happened to this band without sounding disrespectful about his mental health
I have BP1 with acute mania and have had many hospitalizations. All I can say is this is some weird combination of enablement, entitlement and maybe more just his character than we'd like to admit.
