I've still yet to listen to this and how much everyone absolutely vehemently hates it has me incredibly intrigued. I feel like if I approach this like it's a comedy album it'll be amazing.
this is one of those bands I really want to get into but just can't but SA has some weird alure (and status, there I said it) that has me reuturning to try every year (and it just doesn't succeed to captivate me)
listening to the new one rn and I hated the first track but second and specially third are sick haha can't belive it
Suggestions? I mean, the self-titled record has always been pretty close to my heart. "Mara and Me," "Cemetery," and "Death for My Birthday" are all pretty important songs for me personally.
The self titled and IARB are pretty much the best things the band has done. Definitely listen to IARB first, then the self titled. Approach the self titled like a really good pop album
I am a massive Say Anything fan- and "Peace Out" is easily my least favorite song by them. I skip it everytime. Also: I am loving all the love that self-titled is getting in this thread right now
So, I just now listened to the song sample from the new Two Tongues and holy crap, does it piss me off that they're using a similar production style as IDTII. I'm of the (minority) opinion that the production actually benefits that album and works for a one-off kinda approach, but if Max starts going "lofi" for every release, it's really gonna suck. I remember worrying when he started doing The Painful Splits that he'd start producing SA songs in that fashion, and with this production, I'd say that's just as bad. Don't get me wrong, it's just a sample of one song from a side project that's indicative of no more than one song, but it rubs me the wrong way. Also: Definitely start with IARB and Self-Titled. The latter isn't my favorite of theirs anymore, but I actually preferred it to IARB for a good while and that's what really got me into the band. I would also listen to Baseball if you want more "straightforward" pop-punk. I personally think their discography is fairly underrated, and would recommend any of the albums, but those are the best starting points imo.
Yeah, definitely not a fan of that little clip / production style, man that's rough compared to their debut LP.
Just listened to the first Two Tongues LP (for like the second time) and man, it's alright but I like what both Chris and Max are doing these days so so much better, so I have high hopes for new Two Tongues.
Like I listen to "Rum" and I understand how the average person wouldn't care for it, but anyone who's remotely familiar with Say Anything's overall vibe should dig the hell out of that track, it's everything I've always been drawn to about Max's writing.
"#blessed" is my personal fav. Dat "I'll burn out with you..." MmmHmm... Also, I can see why people would have problems with the beginning of "Attaboy," but I think the second half of that song is pretty powerful. Surprised that hasn't gotten more attention.
Anyone else "Wire Mom" on here? Love Max's vocal performance on that one, really takes me back to classic SA. There are a lot to choose from that I like, but "Rum" (which, if it becomes a single could be my favorite single they've had since IDOTG) and that are my favs.
Just got done with this album, and in a hilarious twist I like it more than the last 3. Life's always throwin' you curveballs.
Yeah, super not excited about that Two Tongues clip. Hopefully that doesn't represent the album as a whole.
I mean, sure OK, most people on this site would vehemently disagree but that's the thing about music Am I really the only one who mostly adores the self-titled album?
Actually think you're in the majority for that one. IARB then self-titled is my personal ranking and I think it's the same for most users on here, besides the IDOTG lovers (great album, just needs some trimming)
So we're doing a top albums by Say Anything post? 1. In Defense of the Genre 2. Is A Real Boy/Was A Real Boy 3. Say Anything 4. Hebrews 5. Anarchy My Dear 6. Baseball But Better 7. I Don't Think It Is
I still get bummed out when I remember this album happened, and I even liked Hebrews. IDTII is just... bad. S/T is absolutely wonderful.
