absolute masterpiece, one of the best records of the decade and possibly of all time. A true rival to TDAG and Clarity. Well done Max, you beautiful genius.
Just bad. I struggle to find even a single thing I like about this record and Say Anything used to be my favorite band back in the day.
It's just weird that a bunch of people, perhaps even many people, sat around, listened to this and went: "Yep, that's it."
I actually enjoy this album. Also, between this and me preparing to see Say Anything on their upcoming tour, I've been revisiting their discography and really fell in love with Anarchy.
I feel bad with this album. I've been one of the few people who enjoyed and defended Max's output since signing to Equal Vision, but I honestly can't with this album. I hope for nothing but the best for him. Really hope he never makes an album like this again though.
Tried listening to this again today for the second time ever. I've never really had a painful reaction to music but Max's vocals actually hurt my ears. Turned it off after the third track
Aw, I wouldn't really say something like this. I wasn't a fan (and wrote plenty about why), but in the series of statements I've read (and my personal conversations with him, which granted no one else has read), it's clear that this album was sincere and simply wasn't for me (and plenty of others). Still, others enjoyed it and I would never straight-up say an artist shouldn't keep creating just because I didn't enjoy their output
eh, i didnt mean it to come off as aggressive as it did. ill be honest, i dont like Max as a person nor as an artist. i know hes generally pretty nice and all but some of the stuff he says is really problematic. but as far as his music goes, this band has gone from being my favorite band in 2013 or so, to a band i really cant stand and think should stop. but thats just me, if Max still enjoys it then i doubt a small fry like me will stop him
That sounds like the hardest thing. I don't think I could have a conversation with Max about how I don't like his newest album. Not because I think him or I would be rude, or anything like that, but just because I've loved everything he's done until now. It would feel the same as if I had a conversation with Jonny Depp and just talked about how much I didn't like Mortdecai.
man, I still stand by my opinion over on AP -- this album totally slays! my boss at the station was super surprised when we were playing 17 Coked Up. he thought it was super cool. can understand why people might not like it though. different strokes, different folks.
It's not like he's any different than anyone on AP. He's just a person. You should give talking to him a shot.
Hahah, I would love to if I had the chance. I just wouldn't want the topic specifically to be I Don't Think It Is. Also, from your other post, 17 Coked Up is one of the songs I kinda like from this album. It's pretty cool. I'd talk about that one with him.
I think that's a good approach. Things tend to go a lot better when you focus on common ground. Think of it more as constructive criticism than anything else. He's been pretty great at retweeting/responding to some of my tweets and Aaron's pointed out a similar experience -- you should give it a shot!
I'd love to talk to Max about this album I just would hope he wouldn't get too offended by my opinions on it, ha.
Id love to talk to Max about his struggle with bipolar disorder and compare notes on how we cope with it. I guess we could also talk about guitar techniques. But I'd really like to grill him about some of his awful tweets.
Use one to lead to the other. Think about songs like The Writhing South -- that's always been a song that, to me, jumped out as being "bipolar" in sound (especially the bridge). Just be natural and make it flooooow. you could mention Clarity too -- seems like he's the kind of guy who would love that record.
I like this album a good bit, but most of all it makes me happy that it causes such adverse reactions to it.
First listen: This is a crazy ass album, I appreciate the "don't give a fuck" attitude Second listen: I think I like this more on second listen Third listen: Oh no, this is a mess. What is going on.
