I’ve followed them their entire career from the time I started listening. The lyrics on this album are very bad. Jump through the hoops you want, I don’t get it
On the flip side, I have not really followed them throughout the years and only like a relatively small selection of their music, and I really like this record. As I said tho, I don’t really put a ton of weight on lyrics as a listener.
Reviews like this aren’t as common as they used to be on that site. There are plenty of insightful and positive reviews. It’s not just one person pumping out snark
I did not like the first single but someone in here mentioned Van Halen and you bet your ass I’m listening
Unorganized thoughts: I hear some influence from Zeppelin I on the bass solo and second verse of 1997. The bass solo kind of shamelessly mimics the bass solo on Good Times Bad Times but in a lower key. The other verse bass parts on 1997 are pretty busy and melodic which I like. The solo on 1997 is pretty country which is a nice flair that Arun brings. Chris' leads are very composed and Arun brings the looser and shreddier influence to the solos. The one song on the album that I'd call a top 10 song for the band is 29. Then again, they have 9 albums so that speaks to the parity of good songs throughout their catalog. Suzuki and 1997 also have a case to be top 20 songs in the catalog. I've been jamming through the basslines and rhythm guitar parts for the whole album. There are cool parts throuhout the album. The bassline in the third verse of Renevouz is sort of vintage saves the day style. Overall though the album doesn't come close to In Reverie or Daybreak in terms of complexity for chord structures. For whatever flaws the album has, 29 makes up for it. 29 (the songs starting at 8:30) is my favorite song they've released in 15 years.
I don't mind negative reviews as long as they're substantive. However, I also don't think professional music reviews should be linking out to videos on YouTube of someone having a public mental breakdown.
HOLY SHIT this Clarity review is literally the worst thing I have seen, almost worse than the monkey sniffing it's own butt "review" I DARE any one of you to read the whole thing Jimmy Eat World: Clarity: Pitchfork Record Review Jimmy Eat World Clarity [Capitol] Rating: 3.5
not as bad as ryan though, ryan is possibly the worst pitchfork writer of all time and he... ran the site
Slightly off topic here: There was a decently long article I remember running in AP (between SWYA and IR I think? So around 2002-03) about the oral history of the band (not the one that came out about Through Being Cool in 2014). I just remember it sticking out to me because Eben said he quit the band because he felt it was childish or people didn't respect what he did? For some reason that really stuck out to me. I'd love to read it again. Does anyone remember that? Or am I just crazy?
I think a lot of the complaints are pretty valid on this record. Chris' voice hasn't been very pleasing to me since 06-07 ish. The lyrics are kind of unimaginative and distracting. I still like it though.
Got my Saves The Day vinyls in the mail. Through Being Cool, the white edition of Self-titled and 9. Pumped.
Nice. Self-titled is my only Saves vinyl. I gotta get 9 at the show when I see them in 2 weeks. My buddy recently got I’m Sorry I’m Leaving on vinyl, which nearly completes his collection. I don’t think he has In Reverie, but he’s got the rest. Insane.
Every time I listen to this album, It makes happy to hear them having a blast, and so many people were wrong earlier this year about how Saves The Day were done/ gonna break up and made Chris seem like he was some washed up weirdo, solely based off assumptions.
