Eh, I disagree. First, it's one of the better melodies on that album. Second, the idea of driving around with your friends blasting music is relatively universal. I could connect to that as a dumb teenager. The "miss my mom" line is also humorous and honest.
Sure, but I'm also an adult now and Chris is old as shit. It reminds me of the bad songs on the new blink 182 album about drinking in parking lots. This album feels forced. That, or I just don't connect with that shit anymore. The Menzingers, for instance, have a solid amount of songs on their newest album about looking back on their 20s that aren't as empty or pandering as this. There's something so weird to me about writing a record about writing a record 20 years ago and literally including the lyrics "We're writing a record"
also it's about writing can't slow down but also feels like it's about the new record, time collapses, we move through the same routines for almost all of our lives, it's cool
One final defense of the album. I totally get the lyrics not connecting with people, but I don't think that makes it "bad". If I'm feeling super happy and positive on life then I'm definitely not going to connect with the lyrics of Sound the Alarm. That doesn't mean it's a "bad" album by any means. Chris has always done a really great job of painting a picture with his lyrics, whether it be him talking about how much pain he is in or the nostalgia of the early days of the band. Granted this lyrical approach is different than what we're used to, but the stream-of-consiousness type of writing isn't anything new. From Kerouac to Virginia Wolfe, their writing is very much that style but it's inarguable that it paints a detailed picture for the reader or listener, which is what Chris does on this album. Point being, I get how this won't be a "favorite" but just because it's not in your top doesn't make it a "bad" album. And then lyrics aside, it's great to see them stepping outside of the box a bit with the music composition. Let's all be friends. Bones yes. Pitchfork no.
I don't really buy the idea that it's "supposed to be" bad/funny/full of cliches. That seems like a waste of everyone's time. Running through the lyrics, Rosé (a song I don't even remember listening to) has lyrics that appear to be stream of consciousness yet still worded in an interesting way and not super simple. I'll have to revisit that song.
Why, though? I don't get it. Why not write an honest, heartfelt album about the development of the band instead of "Hey we're in a van we're driving down the road"
Just because it's tongue in cheek or self deprecating doesn't make the feelings behind it less heartfelt
I can't comment on how much of Chris's heart he poured into the lyrics. They appear pretty lazy and poorly written, which is disappointing for a band that released an album which I consider to be the high point of the genre.
pitchfork gave futures a fucking 3.5 so like this STD review shouldn't be surprising album rules - I listen to it at least 5 times a day
Is anyone here going tonight? I have to figure some things out for tomorrow and would love to know the set times
