Harry for Him probably should have been earlier in the episode, that was super fun. Also literally the latest I ever remember a live sketch running
UK SNL getting better acts in the first three episodes than most of this season. Forgot rock exists in a huge way there
Chuck Norris dead. I used to tape episodes of SNL in high school and remember rewatching this short a lot
Sadly, I really not sure if it will catch on. Not because of the people involved, I really like a lot of them like Ania Magliano, Larry Dean, and Emma Sidi, and I’ll give it a go, but I haven’t really heard anyone outside the media talking about it in any way. To start with, it’s a bad time politically to be importing over a show so tied to America. Secondly, SNL is rightly or wrongly considered by the vast majority of the UK as painfully unfunny, and that shouldn’t matter as the humour will be different, but it does. Lastly, this has all been made worse by that dogshit sketch about Tourette’s that went around recently, was discussed and absolutely torn apart on the biggest entertainment podcast we have, and just felt like making fun of a disability. I’d like to be wrong but the deck feels really stacked against it. I hope it finds an audience. It starts in half an hour and on the plus side, is going on after a Premier League game (sadly just Leeds vs Brentford), which will definitely help it.
Cut for time sketch from the Connor Storrie episode referencing the guy w/ Tourette’s who shouted the n-word at the BAFTAs while MBJ and Delroy Lindo were presenting. Humour feels like it’s from the 1980s in a bad way
I watched it. It was decent for a first ep, the best section was Ania and Paddy doing The Weekend Update. Overall, a promising start. Not sure how well Americans will get on with it, lots of more niche UK/Ireland references, like Captain Birdseye, “picky bits”, the Omaze house draw, etc. Some of the sketches didn’t land at all for me (Starmer opener, maternity) while others were really fun (film interview, underage cream). Also it’s a bit too long, a hour is the max needed really. Hopefully people actually watch it as it develops more into it’s own thing.
I thought it was a good first episode, but could have been shorter and considered a tight show. Thought Tina Fey set a high bar for the upcoming hosts. I think most british shows are "all in" on their humour style. SNL obviously has various diffferent humours based on the sketch. For example, i thought the maternity sketch was really funny. @SamLevi11 didnt. I just dont know if generic joe public in the uk will be up for an hour+ show that is hit and miss for them. I liked the Underage Cream, Birdseye, Maternity as my favourites of the night. I thought the film reviewer bit was a great concept, but it dragged out. The news segment hosts im not sure on just yet. Not sure i warmed to Paddy on it. I was dissapointed not to see Larry Dean have a more prominent role in this episode. Don't think the majority of it will translate to USA audiences. Probably on the maternity one (outside of the nhs reference) is universal. You could say the same about SNL USA some of the time, the Sebastian Maniscalo sketches are amazing, but not many folk in the uk really knows who he is.
I did enjoy the UK premier a lot more than I thought I would. There were obviously a decent amount of cultural references that were lost on me but I still laughed quite a bit, and the cast seems really good. I'll keep watching for now It was really interesting and almost surreal to see such a familiar format done differently though, I enjoyed it a lot for that factor alone
