Adds Fey of Michaels’ comment, “It was nice of him to say that, and I love him very much.” She has no response to the suggestion of ever taking the job herself. “He’s irreplaceable,” she says. “His set of gifts and skills are entirely unique. His eye for talent! He’s one of the last three people in show business who actually understand everything. I’ll leave it at that.”
I like that all the successful SNL alums say that, but the main theme of SNL50 was how stressful and anxiety-ridden Lorne makes everything.
Tina Fey Admits Her 'Impulse to Hide and Retire' Is 'Very Strong': 'I Am So Tired of Hearing from Me'
I'm not sure why the narrative that a writer/creative is going to replace Lorne is so strong, he's not the head writer or anything. I think a producer type like Steve Higgins is a lot more likely
This season was chock full of controversial figures, Morgan Wallen, Lizzo, Chappelle, Shane Gillis, Jelly Roll and now Arcade Fire. Shows how much Lorne cares more about clout than accountability. Now I’m no saint cuz I still listen to some artists that have problematic tendencies, but goddamn I’m surprised Kanye didn’t end up a musical guest this season
I also understand that SNL prefers to cater to top 40 and hipster indie, but there’s a lot of great newer rock acts out there. Give me Turnstile, the Dirty Nil, White Reaper, Sleep Token or Ghost. Or Hell, legacy acts like Green Day and Blink are still headlining festivals and making a killing. But they won’t change. It’ll just be rappers with Lil in front of their name and pop stars and the occasional hipster indie act that’s milquetoast as fuck. Sigh. Rant over, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
A pretty shit season for musical guests aside from Chappell Roan, Charli, Gaga and Chalamet I guess lol
Wild they never booked Doechii. Maybe they are waiting until next season because I think she is planning on releasing a proper album later this year.
John Mulaney’s show has been doing a great job with newer bands which is refreshing to see. It reminds me of the golden age of Conan and Letterman performances.
Was literally typing the same thing haha - Mulaney’s show has been really highlighting how much of a fault SNL’s lack of effort in musical guests is. I get back in the day having to fight for viewership on network television, but now in the streaming era you’d think they’d take a few swings
Mulaney and Kimmel have definitely taken more chances that SNL has absolutely neglected. Chappell Roan, Charli, Gaga, and Mkgee to me were the only great gets of the season for musical acts. Mkgee especially, it's rare when the show takes a swing like that on the show.
It was a pretty mediocre musical lineup this year. They really need to switch it up with some of these bookings. Not to be some rock purist, but a couple of rock bands would be nice. Not really sure why hip-hop was taking some strays there. This season, they had all of one hip-hop act (Glorilla). It’s way more of the milquetoast white people music that’s bringing it down (Coldplay, Jelly Roll, Arcade Fire and I hate to say it, but Stevie Nicks was not good.)
The worship SNL has for Arcade Fire and Coldplay is something I'll never understand. 2000s Coldplay and Arcade Fire, sure I get it, but to have them both on for every fucking album is so annoying.
