I definitely got the impression for a few years that a lot of people (particularly more casual fans) viewed him as like the “main guy” on SNL. He had the benefit of being a mainstay while beloved members like Wiig, Sudeikis, Hader, Meyers, Armisen, and Samberg were seeing their final seasons, becoming main cast as the last of them bailed. It left Kenan, Bobby, and Nasim as the only cast to his senior, all of which I think hadn’t been given opportunities to really consistently shine yet. Additionally, the first couple years of his main cast status he weathered the most turnaround SNL had seen since the 90s, which gave the illusion that he was one of the essentials at that time. But if I’m reading the subtext of your post right, I agree, I wasn’t really a fan of him either lol
This was season 16. This was my boomer time frame that I watched faithfully, like you all are doing now. A lot went on to make movies afterwards, sure, and did well.... Id hope the cast that leave now do just as well. Sure, David Spade and Rob Schneider could make crappy movies, but the names are still there,. Dana Carvey Phil Hartman Jan Hooks Victoria Jackson Dennis Miller Mike Myers Kevin Nealon Middle players Chris Farley Tim Meadows (first episode: February 9, 1991) Chris Rock Julia Sweeney (first episode: November 10, 1990) Featured players A. Whitney Brown (final episode: March 16, 1991) Al Franken Adam Sandler (first episode: February 9, 1991) Rob Schneider (first episode: October 27, 1990) David Spade (first episode: November 10, 1990)
I watched a TON of that era on Comedy Central, which explains a lot of the person who I've grown into becoming. As for current SNL, I still watch it, and Vulture isn't wrong, watching SNL like a sport IS fun.
Always funny when I binge SNL on YouTube with my friend and someone like Luke Null, Jon Rudnitsky, John Milhiser or Brooks Wheelan shows up and always elicits a “Who the hell is that?”
Now that you mention that I totally remember him staying another year now, that's so weird that both of us remembered it totally differently He still didn't get much of an exit though iirc
Nasim’s TBS show wrapped airing the first season this week. For a while it felt like it couldn’t really figure out it’s tone, but by the end I think think it found it’s footing and I’m looking forward to a second season
At least those sketches has actual jokes in them. They was like a 3yr period where they couldn’t go a couple months without bringing back another 10 minutes of What’s Up With That
You can’t make the post that you made and then act insulted about a diss towards maybe the most repetitive repeat sketch in the history of the show
It was seasons 36 & 36 where they did a What's Up With That every. fucking. week. I don't mind the sketch at all, but oof it popped up too much. Same with The Californians, tbh.
