wouldn't be the first time Lorne brought in someone because they're incredible at impressions and then had nothing do with them, see Noel Chloe and I want to say Abby Elliott too
At this point, there’s just too many people in the cast and I’m sure it’s frustrating when Kate McKinnon gets most of the sketches. Melissa also made note that a lot of her sketch ideas got shot down and she’s gonna try and bring them to life on her tour (paraphrasing that, of course). If she’s done, she for sure has a solid career ahead of her.
I’ve learned to agree to disagree with this thread about the quality of Melissa’s comedy, but regardless of how anyone feels about her it’s very clear she and SNL are not a very good match If she does leave the show I’d love to see her use some of that extra bandwidth for music. Her last record had some really enjoyable stuff
While the show relies on the same concepts (talk shows, game shows, impression-offs), I still think it’s better than 10 years ago in some parts, when you got the 10,000th installment of a played-out Kristen Wiig character like Target Lady or 15 unbearable minutes of The Californians.
If I were to venture a guess, Cecily is gone and WU was her big finale. Pete seemed ready to go, considering he did the whole show in a hoodie and if Melissa is to be believed, she’s taking the Sasheer route and just exiting the show quietly out of her own accord. I don’t think SNL does a whole lot of big goodbyes any more, if you look back at how the bigger players like Leslie Jones, Sudeikis and Moynihan just kind of left. Vanessa Bayer got hoisted up by the cast and carried out the studio, but I think that’s as far as it’s gone for celebratory exits.
I miss Vanessa so much man. She was perfect on this show. Was actually just rewatching her Dawn Lazarus character the other day and laughing my ass off
I actually remember being really upset about how Sudeikis went out, Kristen got that big ridiculous graduation sketch for her farewell, and Jason had also already announced he was leaving and basically got nothing. I distinctly remember him just standing on the side of the stage away from everybody at the end of that sketch. He may have preferred it that way but it always rubbed me the wrong way
Kristen Wiig’s sendoff was truly absurd. Mick Jagger and Arcade Fire playing you off while you say goodbye to everybody one-by-one under the guise of a sketch? Imagine if they did something that big for everyone
that wasn’t just her though. pretty sure that was her, sudeikis and maybe one other person (forte?) doing goodbyes at once
They still tend to have major cast members do one final sketch with a beloved character of theirs when they’re going to leave. But that’s also assuming the cast member has made the decision to leave prior to the end of the season. Lots of people decide not to come back between seasons so there isn’t a chance to send them off.
I remembered it that way too, but it turned out that he left a year later in 2013 and didn’t announce that he was done until mid-summer, which would explain why he didn’t get the same exit as Hader and Armisen, who also left that year. Absolutely. I hated it so much, especially since Wiig had clearly overstayed her time there and had overtaken the show (not to take away from some of the great work she did in her prime there). Lorne can’t help but be Lorne and show his hand with the cast members he favors.
Her final season was right after the smash success of Bridesmaids so all of a sudden the spotlight was on her all year
