Weird? I thought this was pretty good. He did a good job of making the night seem pretty exciting, manic, and he made it feel like a humongous entertainment zeitgeist moment in time. Not sure what people were expecting? Thought the actors and portrayal were tight. I like this kind of stuff and seeing this moment with all of these heavy hitters about to debut on a big stage....and i like the usage of Milton Berle and Lorne going to the other sound stage when they're still recording a very dated variety hour show. I like old Hollywood stuff too and it made me take a deeper dive into early snl
Besides Morris I think the guy who played Michael Donoghue is my other favorite performance in this. His contribution to that original outsider tone of SNL is really underrated in most modern retrospectives so it was cool to see him get a lot of time here.
honestly the majority of the performances in this were fairly good to great, the script and direction are just so lifeless. i would say it felt like it was directed by AI but saying it’s a reitman movie more or less gets that point across anyways.
Finally caught this. As an SNL and behind the scenes Hollywood nerd I really enjoyed it! First thing I said to my wife was “now THAT is my kind of sports movie, that the show must go on despite the odds”. Having read Live From New York, I knew they’d have to stretch some things for dramatic and comedic effect but I think Reitman pulled it off. The “cast” cast absolutely charmed my pants off.
