Hot take: ISOSG is the sound of a band floundering and uninspired because they'd known for years that they chose a singer who wasn't really working out, but weren't in a position to remedy that so they could progress. The older material like On My Own and Is This Real still slays, though.
Taking a swing and having it not resonate with fans is one thing, but I meant that more in the sense of being a good editor of your own work and determining if a given idea actually fits with the vision of the project (assuming there was a vision in the first place). That's what feels like was missing in this case.
Keep in mind that 2009 was a peak era of major labels trying to figure out what to do with bands like Saosin and failing completely. There's plenty of blame to go around when it comes to how people feel about ISOSG - Cove and everyone else in the band included. BUT they were also sent back to the drawing board with different producers multiple times by Virgin (who acquired the band via a merger with Capitol two years prior) during the creation of the album. The whole thing was a perfect storm of factors that led to the album being what it is. There's a different universe where the band isn't lost in the shuffle on a label that probably didn't want them to begin with, in which the self-titled follow up sounds completely different. But that's life, I guess. Saosin were far from the only band to have that experience during that time.
I just want a repress of the self titled and to see them live with Cove again without paying a grand to fly to Vegas. there’s probably an ep of songs on ISOSG that I enjoy but I haven’t gone back to that record in years. Why listen to that when you can listen to the self-titled
Self Titled vinyl is coming this summer. I truly enjoy ISOSG. Maybe because I was anticipating new Saosin for so long and that it got me through some tough classes in college. TTN > ST > ISOSG > ATS
I’m more upset with myself than anyone in this thread could be regarding ATS. After waiting 7 years for a new album, it just fell so flat for me. The album sounds like one continuous song with no distinct high points for me. I even recently listened to this and my attention was lost on it about halfway through listening. I really tried to like it. Additionally, I’ve never been able to get into Circa Survive ever, either. So it might be an Anthony thing for me which bums me out because I know he’s contributed to a lot of great things. Really needing a new Sao album in my life.
Apparently the band is re-recording the S/T with Cove. Not sure why they would re-record an album that already sounds perfect, especially when they're way overdue for new music
Cove posted a story on IG today showing he was in the studio with Saosin. Beau also made a post recently with the caption "ST 2024 guitar tracking setup". There are some reddit rumors as well. Don't think it's actually been announced, but all signs point to it being a re-recording of the album.
i get what you are saying, this is the one song that stuck out to me and it's because of the guitar lead. it's the only song i revisit , i dig the vocal melody as well.
Thrice re-recorded TAITA and it was really cool, cause it seems they wanted for it to sound more raw and live. This holds water with Thrice cause they're an amazing sounding band live. Can't imagine any possible improvements to Saosin's ST being done in 2024. I hope it's just something new
They are redoing the S/T... Beaus Twitch Discord Mod confirmed it on the Discord and it has to do with rights to the recordings and such.. plus they just get along with Cove again haha... I wonder what they will do with Justins parts or if they will pay him for it but that seems unlikely given they supposedly cut all his parts from Along The Shadow just to not have to have to deal with him involved legally.
If it’s a more raw, different take on those songs it could be really interesting, but I’d want it to almost be like TAITA otherwise it wouldn’t hit.
Like with Incubus, this feels like one of those projects that's less about the fans and more about the band. That's not a knock either, I'm all for it. If it makes sense in the long run to rerecord it so you can make more money off of it, then do it. Free it from its corporate shackles.
