I would recommend checking their EP “The Shape of Punk is Dumb” out and “False Intentions”. It’s like a heavier Saosin with some yelling - I’m super into it.
Yeah, I think I remember that too. Pretty fucked up. It’s probably good for Cove’s mental health that he got kicked out.
Also, not a popular opinion but I really enjoy a little over half of Solid Ground. IMO it has some of their best work is on that record (I Keep Mu Secrets Safe, The Alarming Sound…, Is This Real, and Fireflies) but some of their most lazy work too. I think if they cut out some fat, went with a different singular producer instead of a few like they did - it would have yielded better results. I also wish the band was much kinder to Cove and in a more healthy way got him to stop smoking cigarettes. Oh well.
he started smoking because of the comment that was made. He left that meeting bummed out and someone on an elevator noticed and asked him if he wanted a cigarette. Obviously, he could’ve said no but if they had been better people in a variety of ways, they probably would’ve been a lot more successful.
I really don't think I would've liked Saosin as much as I do if it wasn't for the self titled being out and then working my way back to TTN. When ST came out, I was trying to listen to the heaviest and most brutal stuff I could get my hands on, but I loved that album so much and probably put my music listening trajectory on a much more mellow path, and I'll always have a soft spot for it for that reason.
I'm 30 and I feel like this would be such a crazy thing to try to explain to an 18-25 year old getting into this type of music, haha.
I've always wondered how much Justin contributed to the Saosin sound, because I find the Beau & Chris narratives seem to suggest they've always been the driving force, but I always got the feeling Justin was responsible for some of best melodic memorable lead parts. I have no idea if that was actually the case, but he always struck me as being a technical player and a talented writer. That said, I think Beau seems like a great dude, and I've watched a ton of his videos. His guitar ability is legit. Love watching him play the newer Sao parts. I also follow Justin on a bunch of stuff, he always seems nice, but I always find it very weird how he post so much about The Used & the album he was on, given how acrimonious his departure was. That said, Quinn from The Used always seemed like the most decent guy in that band, and Quinn + Branden seemed to get in a bit of a spat with Bert + Jeph around the anniversary shows.
I can't find it now, but I bet a bunch of you remember the first Cove live performance. I think he just did one song or something (I Can Tell) and was absolutely horrendous. That seemed pretty mad at the time that they wanted someone so inexperienced to take over, just because they wanted an Anthony-lite.
Justin is still posting about The Used album regularly? I don’t follow him, so I haven’t seen it. I had such high hopes for that album with his playing, but I just can’t get into it.
Yeah, on his Insta stories though. Stuff like saying how proud he is of it. I dunno, I guess its the last music he was a part of, but does seem weird considering everything..
I still really love a lot of the instrumentals on that album. Personally I can understand why he'd still have some pride in it, but yeah considering how dramatic their split was I am surprised he'd actually post about it.
Had no idea Saosin released this album and just discovering it now. I have to say, Saosin w/ Anthony is just a solid cut above Saosin w/ Cove. There's something about the songs with Cove that just feel... cheesy. Anyone else get that vibe? This album blends together a bit but after repeated listens, it's really really good.
I don't always know what Anthony is singing about but I prefer that over something cheesy like "You're Not Alone"
Along the shadow didn’t do much for me but I was shocked at how big you’re not alone and voices got. Super cheesy, boring songs.
Voices is good musically, and unlike many of the Cove era, even a halfway solid vocal melody. The lyrics are what you'd expect from a band working with Howard Benson in the mid-2000s in an effort to "break through."
I have problems with the Cove era but his vocal melodies are not one of them, lmao. dude came up with some obscenely catchy choruses and they're still great today Voices holds up but yeah You're Not Alone is very bad
You're Not Alone and Voices are some of the best songs the band has done. The Anthony songs are great, too. They're both great front men for the band.
I just think there are a bunch of forgettable tracks on Along The Shadows, although I'm obsessed with The Silver String
