Going to listen to ST on my flight tmrw. Been a long time. Drinking from the fountain might be my favorite saosin son. I can listen to that 1 million times and not get tired of it
Yeah... once you've let Anthony go off on something your band released, you can't just treat the lyrics and vocals like a nuisance on the checklist for getting your new music out the door. IMO that's exactly what they did by picking Cove in the first place. In fairness, Anthony kinda fucked them over and put them in a tough spot, so I'm not saying that totally judgmentally.
Well knowing what we know now, “fucked them over” it’s not the term I’d use. Addiction is not a joke.
idk, I wasn't aware that was a direct factor in him electing to run back home to start Circa with Colin as soon as TTN raised his profile... and giving Sao zero notice, right before they were going on tour. I'm sure it was complicated, but it's very hard for me not to feel slightly bad for them, even acknowledging how incredible Circa's output turned out to be.
Still remember the band sending me the instrumentals before they had a name or had brought in Anthony and they had record companies fumbling over themselves to sign them.
I absolutely loved the self-titled album when it came out. Not quite as heavy hitting as their scene classic EP with Anthony but I thought Cove nailed it in the studio. I did get to see Saosin with Cove when they opened for Alexisonfire way back in 08 and they sounded terrible live unfortunately. Cove just couldn’t hit those same highs live. You could tell they tried to rectify that with their follow up ISOSG but Cove sounded so dramatically different to me and the album overall was a huge disappointment.
Ha i was at Tour (the bled were also supposed to be on it but missed my date :() I missed Saosin’s set because I had an exam or something. The only thing I remember of that night is Dallas Green sounding like a literal angel.
An early version of Illusion & Control can be heard at 12:33, one for Ideology Is Theft at 31:51 below. I also have vague memories of a third song that had a similar rhythm to Illusion & Control, and didn't end up on the album after all, but I can't find any footage of it.
Thanks for the link. Interesting in the Illusion & Control that Justin does most of work on it especially during the verses.
Has anobydy got a link to that? I'm not sure if I've seen it at all, but kinda remember the deal. Now of course I had to put on the s/t after reading that many posts about it. It's been a long time - I've got some more understanding of the guitar and production, so that changes my perception, but still sounds fucking amazing.
The original art work? It's on the wiki page for the album. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Search_of_Solid_Ground
oh ok, thanks. I seriously don't remember it then, well and it's not THAT bad. Taking Back Sunday's s/t comes to my mind, which was far worse and they still went with it, the difference being TBS used to have more detailed album covers from the start, whereas Saosin had a much simpler design. Wouldn't think people cared as much.
Self-titled is still my favorite album, even if it is due to nostalgia. Loved that album back in the day. Then Along the Shadow. I enjoy a few songs from In Search of Solid Ground still.
Pretty sad to see so much Cove hate - I love the guys voice and his work in Dead American is awesome. Can’t wait for their debut LP to drop next year!
He was awesome in the studio on the Self Titled but after touring for a few years, it's obvious they tried to make his voice match the rawness with ISOSG which didn't help the output at all in my opinion. I keep meaning to give Dead American a solid listen as I've only heard a single or two.
Howard Benson worked with Cove a lot on his voice until we got what’s on the first record. When it came time to record ISOSG, they couldn’t work with Howard again even though that had always been the plan. Also, Cove mentioned in a couple podcasts that one of the saosin guys said they would be doing better if Cove could sing better, and none of the other guys stuck up for him. This was after they successfully toured on that record for over 2 years. After that he was checked out. I think a combination of the two lead to the lack luster vocals on the second record
That’s a pretty shitty thing to do to basically a kid. If those fuckers hadn’t just been trying to find an Anthony-lite replacement, things would have probably panned out better for them. Cove didn’t really deserve any of that.

I agree with this, and I feel bad for the dude. The whole mess falls more on Beau and Co. for their decision to hire him. But with that said, Cove's lyrics and vocal melodies still can't hold a candle to Anthony's... even if they were serviceable in the context of the genre as a whole.
