When I first listened to the album I thought his screams were really bad, and while I still wish there was less screaming, they have grown on me after repeated listens.
The Stutter Says a Lot is now my current fav. Also still think The Secret Meaning...isn't getting enough love. It's short and sweet.
'Secret Meaning' is probably the only song I have a hard time tolerating, because it's solely based on screams.
This record sounds great in my car. I don't mind his screams at all. They aren't the best I've ever heard, but after getting familiar with the songs I don't have an issue with them. The moments when they're paired with clean vocals are some of the best on the album imo.
i dont like secret freedoms. pretty by the numbers hardcore song imo i love anthonys screams but i prefer them on ttn by a lot
Listen to it every time I'm in the car. Loudly! I've always been a Cove guy (I know, it's like picking Sammy Hagar over David Lee Roth) but something about this record just clicks with me on every level. For me Saosin has always been about Alex's drumming and it feels like after being somewhat neutered on ISOSG, they just gave him his sticks and unleashed him in the studio. He fucking kills it on this record. 1-2 times a day for the last week and I'm not even close to tired of it yet. Very few things in life are worth the wait -- this was. Welcome back, boys.
I think "The Secret Meaning" is the only song on here that really gets back to that hardcore sound. A lot of these songs(with some tweaks and changes) could've been from any one of Anthony's recent projects imo. "The Secret Meaning" is the only one that transcends that. It's the only one that truly sounds different enough from anything he's done recently to feel fresh. 'The Secret", is honestly more the sound I was expecting/hoping for from this reunion. Instead this album, more often than not, sounds like a reincarnation of Circa's recent output. Now. That being said, I really enjoy this album. Huge....huge, huge, AG fan :).
Finally going to give this a listen tomorrow. I wasn't a huge fan of the song or two I heard prior to the release but I'm excited to hear it as a whole.
I guess so, but you never know if he'd write any of it anyways, that's what I meant, like there's not much of it on ISOSG.. And about the latter, I think it was more than having a side-project - it was going with another band full-time, while at the same time they needed to strike all at once, otherwise it wouldn't have such an impact. It's a shame though. Actually one of my favorites here! I was trying to imagine how great would it be if they had Spencer from Underoath guest vocal on a song like that one, would be a great touch ;p ...all in all I enjoy Anthony's screaming a lot, and I don't understand why some people would like to get rid of them - I also prefer him singing, but that's what I have CS for ;D
But I don't think that song is like anything they've really done in the past. 'Count Back from Ten" is the closest song to the TTN era. I expected a middle-ground between Circa and TTN honestly. I honestly thought this would end up sounding pretty close to the self-titled, and I'd bet it does if you take out the screaming. Just maybe not quite as "hook-y" as the st.
Honestly I still can't hear anything else that reminds me of Circa Survive besides "The Stutter Says A Lot". And I'm only talking about the verses, as Anthony sings a very Juturna-esque melody.
I think this is one of the first verses where he really goes up into his upper range since juturna and on letting go.. Since blue sky noise it seems he saves all of his high melodies for choruses and bridges
Really enjoying this album. Can't wait to see them at Taste Of Chaos. Might go nuts during Seven Years.
I like this album more than Descensus and maybe more than Violent Waves. But as far as enjoying Saosin more than Circa Survive, that's about the extent of it.
I like TTN and the s/t more than anything Circa have ever done. I like this more than anything other than OLG, Circa have just never really connected with me like Saosin.
