Damnit I just noticed the similarity in vocal melodies between the prechorus (0:17) in Sore Distress and the bridge in (2:52) in Old Friends. Not a big deal, but I hate when little things like that pop out at me because I know I'll never unhear them
Multiple listens and I'm still loving it. I don't listen to much of this type of music but this feels fresh and well-done to me. I think everyone was curious if they would just pump out some songs that are either TTN or S/T clones but they didn't and that's cool
I really didn't know what to expect from this album, but I was blown away on first listen. I think it has everything I love about these guys as musicians. I was starting to forget how happy an album can make me. I was high when I listened to the album for the first time, and the part that starts around the 1:45 mark in "Ideology is Theft" and the ending of "Illusion and Control" are the closest I've ever been to having an orgasm while listening to music. English is not my native language, so maybe I'm wrong on this one, but the lyrics feel much more straightforward than anything Anthony Green has written before.
I know exactly what feeling you're talking about and I love it so much. Like when you get to a part of a song for the first time and every second seems to fall perfectly into place, like pieces to a puzzle that create an image so much prettier than you imagined it would be. There have been multiple times I've gotten to those parts in songs and I almost always audibly start yelling hahah. It's like being on a roller coaster or something. A Wilhelm Scream is probably the band that's happened to me most with.
That bridge in Ideology is Theft is super euphoric, for sure. I think The Secret Meaning of Freedom is climbing up my list. The past few times I've listened to the album, I repeat that song two or three times. Initially, my gut feeling was that too many of the songs end too abruptly, but I'm slowly starting to appreciate that they also heavily encourage repeat listens because of it. The Secret Meaning of Freedom is my favorite example, because it's absolutely packed with cool parts that only play for a very brief time. One listen just isn't enough to get it out of my system.
Racing is another one with an interesting structure. The first time I heard it live, I came away thinking the bridge/outro part was the chorus, and I had to listen a few more times to notice that it never repeats. This album definitely isn't afraid to play with expectations about how a chorus should sound, or what the poppiest part of a song should be. tl;dr my appreciation for this album keeps growing.
I'm not really into this style of music much nowadays, but there is something about Anthony Green that will always draw me into his music.
Illusion and control and stutter use a similar melody line at points as well, those songs are so different though. I can't wait to have the lyrics to this bc here is a ton I am missing.
this some primo lazy cuisine. slap some boneless skinless chicken thighs in a pan (like a pound), add two thirds a cup of water and however much taco seasoning you want (buy the kind in the shaker - I get badia), when water starts almost boiling flip them thighs, once water is boiling again turn the heat down to half and start separating the thighs into smaller pieces with a spatula, once the water's basically gone go and grab your huge bottle of cholula (you have this, right?) and absolutely douse the damn chicken in it and turn the heat all the way up, get some nice crispy bits on the (now should be very small) chicken parts, then eat in whatever manner you please (preferably some american-ass tacos with lettuce/tomato, this is not an authentic recipe at all) grubbin' with minimal effort, it's what I'm about. don't even need to get a cutting board dirty
haha I was joking, though now that I have the recipe I'm curious about where in this process you would recommend blasting the Saosin. Wait, can this be a thing? Can we start a "Cooking Playlists" thread? Step 1: Boil Water*, play "It's So Simple" Step 2: They Perched on Their Stilts, Pointing and Daring me to Break the pasta in half before dropping it into the pot Step 3: Count Back from Ten minutes while the pasta cooks Step 4: Serve to friends and family if You're Not Alone *If you cannot do this, skip all remaining steps and queue up "Bury Your Head" If this is does not seem as much fun to anyone else as it does to me, I apologize. I've been working on a research project relentlessly and is the only fun writing I have engaged in all day.
Same!! It's an awesome record... I've just followed Anthony for so long it's hard not love anything he does
Starting to fall in love with some parts here or there, some great vocal melodies and structures, with each listen I start to enjoy it more! There's one drawback I see in some riffs sounding really old-fashioned, but there's some great ones too on the other hand. After reading the interview here on Chorus I'm regretting that they didn't select some more modern songs, like surprisinly, I think "Silver String" is a perfect piece of their old style but set in new sounds etc., I'd love to hear those songs that they said would come out more spacey and post-rockich, instead of straight-forward melodic riffs - it makes me think the record's kinda all over the place, without setting a strong tone. But maybe I'll get it soon.
This record went from something that I liked to pretty much guaranteeing itself a spot in my top 5 of the year
