okay, yeah i thought i heard of a phil from as i lay dying. i would have never guessed that would make sense but i guess it does.
It's really interesting Anthony talks about the Circa breakup being so awful bc it was their entire livelihoods. You'd think Saosin would be by far his best alternative for making a living, but he seems to have blown them off in favor of more niche side projects like Dunes and TSOAF (other than solo stuff of course). Wonder whether he got fed up with waiting for Beau and Phil to write vs. just not liking the direction they went, or something else.
when i think of anthony i think of saosin because that was his first breakout band, correct? i know he was in circa way longer but still. that first saosin ep made its mark.
I feel like the sao shows with Anthony didn’t sell all that well from what I remember. I remember walking into one day of after along the shadow. Didn’t they cancel some shows overseas as well? Shows that cove has went on and have sold really well and they talk about how the crowd is crying at shows. Maybe this is me being old and around the scene for too long but I’m finding a lot of the scene “hype” bands aren’t having the same success that newer bands are. It was really weird for me last year going to a sold out show for free throw in the same venue that sound of animals fighting barely filled half of. My way of saying my experience is very limited to my area and what I’m seeing. Newer emo bands doing great. Older ones not so much. Even Dunes didn’t sell out same venue I saw Saturdays at your place at. Really interesting to me. Probably also a bigger conversation. Can’t remember last show I saw with AG in the band that was sold out.
Yeah I could be totally wrong in assuming Sao+AG shows were selling way more than Dunes. As far as saying AG blew them off... I mean, he was going to be on LP4. He posted about how exciting the demos were and even sang on some of them, and then suddenly Cove replaced him. It's hard to believe they forced him out against his will.
remember when I said its obvious that Anthonys not in Saosin anymore again, and i listed all the reasons, well now its still obvious after hearing that interview
im curious as well. but booked shows + merch is a band mans salary and hes got alot of that. i think towards the middle to end of circa they were making some very good dough, and they toured like year round almost.
All these demos sound great, though I hope there's some heavier and poppier stuff to break up the potential monotony because those previewed are all in the It's Far Better To Learn / Collapse camp, with the slower one being more akin to I Never Wanted To. A big reason Along The Shadow is my goto album these days is due to its diversity. I feel like they succeeded in capturing every era of the band, even if Anthony's vocal approach isn't pop oriented/hook centric like Cove on S/T but more ethereal. Curious to find out if there are screams as well. I remember being pleasantly surprised by the amount of them on Along The Shadow as I wasn't expecting Anthony to bring them back to this extent. Anyway, these def feel like S/T 2.0. For once a band saying their new album is going to sound like their commercial peak is actually going to happen lol. A remaining question mark is how big the melodies will get as that's a huge appeal in S/T, that thing is filled with gigantic hooks, with harmonies and everything. Earworms for days (now decades)!
Does he say something of the sort in the Hardlore podcast? That's interesting because that's not how I remember the 2018-2023 period, from the time Beau started teasing a new album on IG/twitter to Cove being officially back as the sole lead singer. A few times over the years, I remember Beau saying they were sitting on albums worth of demos, ready to have Anthony lend some vocals on, but he was always busy with another project.
They did allude to Anthony featuring on a new song at some point. Not sure if this will still happen but fingers crossed. Anthony and Cove sharing vocal duties would heal my teen self lol
that demo is instrumentally sick and cove sounds much better than i was expecting but i dont like the chorus and going off of how beau is talking about it he doesnt seem to either lol
I think to understand the dynamic, you have to understand what it’s like living with an active addict. While he does seem like such a genuinely good person, he’s talks about how he burned so many bridges because of his addiction. At a certain point, you have to put up boundaries. It feels like he’s gotten a lot of chances to make music because he’s so genuine, earnest, and very talented, but he doesn’t shy away from the fact that he knows his addiction has gotten in the way of opportunities with a lot of his music career and family.
Nah, I didn't hear him say anything on this that explained the Sao situation. I agree with your summary of what's been said publicly. Beau had a bunch of demos circa 2021-22, said they were mainly waiting on Anthony, then suddenly said they were subbing in Cove. I'm mainly just curious what made Anthony decide not to be involved since his full-time band was no longer competing for his time.
Hate to speculate, but it may have been a business decision depending on how they wanted to compensate him as a member/contributor, especially since "instead" of pursuing those he has focused on LSD and his solo material. If they aren't talking much about it, it makes me think it's probably something like that, because that is never a comfortable topic.
I really wish the Hardlore podcast broached the subject of Saosin 4.0 or Anthonys place/second split but it really doesnt even touch it. Seems probably intentional haha. Wonder if we may see Anthony do something new “full time” soon.
i am at least happy we got a new sound of animals fighting album even if i have no idea their plans to stick around (did not watch the interview yet)
i used to think LSD was supposed to be his full time thing (and it was for a bit) but in that podcast interview he explains the situation now very clearly. def interesting, and thats the context for what i mean with my last comment. i.e. deliberate small touring schedules for that project, and albums “for fun”, in between the other members rekindled day jobs.
I must admit I checked Spotify listeners after you called Dunes niche. But wow those numbers are lower than expected.
it shouldnt be niche at all but yeah….. im guessing theyre just as shocked by how low the stream numbers are. pretty big bummer as a fan.
I'm just asking for pitchforks now but Dunes is... fine. Saosin has proven they're capable of better, even if most of it was a long time ago. I'm not saying ATS was leaps and bounds better than the Dunes LPs, but I have higher hopes Saosin could still surprise us between the two projects... nevermind the difference in audience size. Granted, I don't care for the other Dunes guys' bands besides Coheed.
