Choctaw singer-songwriter Samantha Crain will release Gumshoe on May 2nd, 2025 — her first full-length album in five years.

excerpt from a recent Samantha Crain newsletter said:

Gumshoe was written largely in the winter of 2022 and I made home demo recordings of everything throughout the spring of 2023. This album is largely about opening myself up to the vulnerabilities of human relationships and sharing the burdens and joys of life in a more reciprocal manner, so I knew I needed to relinquish some of my usual project controlling nature and make this recording experience about collaboration. So I found a studio where my studio band (Taylor Johnson, Brine Webb, Penny Pitchlynn of BRONCHO, and Matthew Duckworth Kirksey of the Flaming Lips) could spend 10 days arranging and recording the record together in one room and that studio was Postal Recordings in Indianapolis, Indiana. We all drove up from Oklahoma together, my dog Marty in tow as well and proceeded to make this record for you with Taylor and Brine sharing producer duties with me. After returning back home to Oklahoma, Taylor and Brine and I mixed the record at Lunar Manor Studios in Oklahoma City (where I recorded my last record "A Small Death" and where I do much of my film scoring work) and sent it off to Joe Causey (Voyager Mastering) to be mastered.

Then I set to work on the next big aspect of putting this album together which was the artwork. Another big theme of this record is leaning into the curiosities I might have, even if they seem difficult, and one of those curiosities was learning the skill of Native beadwork that I see so often in my Choctaw community. So I began learning this skill and hand-beaded all the album artwork (the LP artwork, the vinyl stickers, the single artwork) while we waited for the album to find its place in the world. It was tedious and frustrating at times but a meaningful example of the life that one must live and experience and accept in order to create art at times.
