Saltburn (Emerald Fennell, December 1, 2023) Movie • Page 7

Discussion in 'Entertainment Forum' started by iCarly Rae Jepsen, Jul 25, 2023.

  1. Fennell seems annoying in more ways than one, but a lot of folks in here seem to be trying to analyze her intentions WAY too hard. I really don't think it's that deep.

  2. In the spirit of the thread, I'll be a little shit-stirrer. Some (but not all) of the 2023 films I thought were worse than this include:

    - Asteroid City
    - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
    - The Super Mario Bros Movie
    - Totally Killer
    - No One Will Save

...and more. Wouldn't crack my top 10 unfortunately (it had the potential for a bit), but far from the worst film I've seen this year. On par with Cocaine Bear, which I truly expected to hate and had a fun little time with.

I can’t imagine not loving Asteroid City unless you are fully out on Wes Anderson

Different strokes. That’s such a special and deeply moving movie imo

she’s a filmmaker who has made two movies that beat you over the head with a message in the least subtle way possible lol. the problem is that you don’t have to analyze her intentions at all.

She is the writer, director, and producer. Her films are not based on books or pre-existing material. Everything in the film is a choice she made, and it would be insulting to her intelligence to pretend that things happened by accident.

  9. It feels like the people who believe that are insulting her intelligence anyway so what’s the difference lol. Sounds like fake concern

it’s insulting to think the person who created something fully has agency over what they’re creating?? what?

  12. Gonna bow out for now because today sucks and threads like this make me feel worse. I don't love this movie, I just think the hyperbole carried over from AP to this site is insane sometimes.

  13. I mean, maybe I just misunderstood Tetra’s post (there was nothing quoted to contextualize it) but it seems like he’s saying it’s an insult to Fennell’s intelligence to assume she made a pointless movie with intention, as opposed to the reality in which she made an intentional movie that entirely missed its point. I’m saying that the people falling on the latter end are insulting her intelligence anyway, so what’s the difference

Her first film stated repeatedly that the system fails sexual assault survivors and then at the end of the film the police come to save the day, even if the potential charges are going to be questionable at best. In this film the ultra-rich, although aloof, come off as pretty kind and reasonable compared to the murderer who isn't of their class.

There are a lot of filmmakers trying to copy Parasite over the last few years, but they don't have the talent or the artistry. Parasite aimed its ire specifically at the rich, and while the poor family could be read as parasites as well it is clear that it is the trickle-down effect of the scraps that they are left to fight for. In this film the rich will invite you to their extravagant mansion and throw you a birthday party and even bequeath their entire estate to you, but their crime is what exactly?

i don’t want to speak for him since he’s in here but i think he’s saying it’s an insult to say that the person who wrote, directed and produced the movie isn’t in control of whatever message the movie is choosing to or not choosing to have. she has built a career pretty quickly as an auteur - there’s no reason to assign her less control of her movies than a wes anderson or steven soderbergh etc.

  16. This makes sense, though I guess I’m missing where anyone here is arguing otherwise. But it doesn’t really matter

I think the scene where we go to Barry Keoghan's house and it's also gigantic and larger than 99.5% of people's homes also says a lot, I don't think this a simple rich vs poor story.

I’ve been thinking about this lately. I can see normies watching this or even something like Poor Things and thinking “That was the weirdest movie ever!”

so I have to ask myself genuinely… what do I even consider weird anymore. I’m so desensitized at this point.

When I was leaving Poor Things today the employee waiting to sweep asked if it was good because it looked "wonky". You can definitely see where it would be weird for people who mainly watch wide release films.

A rich vs poor story would atleast make sense. This mess mugs the affectations of class struggle but really just wants to drink cum from the bath.

    - Infinity Pool
    - Indiana Jones
