There have been a few posts in here that pretty accurately sum up how I feel but this nails it exactly

 

lumping babylon in with those other two pieces of shit is insane

even if you dislike the movie, the cinematography is incredible and mentioning those two but leaving out la la land, first man and no time to die is a head scratcher

 

Honestly havent even seen Babylon, just everybody talking shit about it and La La Land lol

 

Anyways back to this movie. I understand the idea of wanting what you don't have, kind of ingraining yourself in the family to get to the top... but why the sexual stuff? Is he literally just a freak on top of it? That's the biggest problem I had with the film until the end. It seems clear he wants what they have -- wealth, status maybe -- but the sex stuff seems a little unfocused.

 

based on pretty much everyone i’ve seen write about it, it’s either a 5* or a 1* and no in between

la la land is chazelle’s worst but it still looks insane/the cinematography is what recommends it

 

I think he was getting off on having the upper hand on them. With Venetia, he thinks being willing to go down on her during her period is hyper masculine and she lets him put his fingers in her mouth. Then he’s literally on top of Farleigh and getting him to submit to “behaving”. And then with Felix he’s “won”. That was my takeaway at least

This. It all seemed like "what can we do to shock the audience" and then "how can we one up that with the next scene", but none of it served any real purpose.

 

It feels pretty clearly to me that it’s just a way to portray his desire for dominance? Idk, doesn’t feel that deep. It’s raunchy but that’s just the movie

And it definitely served purpose lol, his hookup with Venetia had an impact on the story and the one with Farleigh showed us that even at his most vulnerable he was an immovable character. It also gave Barry a chance to steal his phone

 

I guess I feel like his motivations are muddy, and when the film attempts to tell me directly what they were at the end of the film, I don't really believe them. But again, I enjoyed the movie aside from that one major issue

 

That’s fair - if there had to be exposition it should’ve been about his motivation, not just a recap of shit we already knew he did. Would have at least explained the more questionable scenes, haha. I’m fine taking them at face value but that would have been better

 

The flashbacks at the end didn't really bother me at all, it felt more like confirmation than a huge reveal and I thought it was fun to go back and see everything he'd done, especially before that final scene as it made it even more impactful. The part where it showed him typing gibberish on the laptop was very funny to me.

The sexual stuff seemed to me to be one more thing he was jealous of and saw as a window into that world and a way to gain some power or favour. It seemed like he was trying to give them whatever he thought would work. I thought all of those scenes worked to show more about the characters and the changing dynamics between them personally. But yeah he was clearly also a little freak.

 

Poor people actually aren’t that poor they have iPhones and they want to steal your wealth from you. That’s what eat the rich means - Emerald Fennell probably

 

it’s probably worse than that, it’s probably “what do you mean i’m rich, my family was working class” like that insane victoria beckham clip

 

I believe it's possible she could think that way, but I didn't get any of that from this movie lol

 

The Parasite comparisons would've been the most insulting part of the films reception if not for the baffling insistence that this movie is queer cinema and a good representation at that.

 

How would you not know where Liverpool is? This is so infuriatingly stupid.

 

I think the mom knew where Liverpool was, everything they say is exaggerated for conversation's sake because that's what fake people do.

 

They have to eat lunch after discovering their dead son because they are so out of touch. Get it?

 

His sexuality doesn’t really matter, he wasn’t fucking Farleigh or Venetia because of attraction. And looking for “good representation” is a trash mindset anyway. Let the gays be fucked up little freaks!

 

The family was so elite they had Superbad on DVD in 2006
