This was…I don’t even know. It’s impressive that the cast bought in as hard as they did. That and how great it looks makes it really hard for me to figure out how I feel about it. Great performances, probably won’t ever know if I liked it or not. Barry can do anything it seems. Can’t believe I almost tried to watch this stoned

Rosamund Pike’s line about “I used to be a lesbian but it was too wet” got me. Couldn’t be me!

Feel like I watched a different movie than this entire thread, hah. Had a good time, laughed a lot. Really dug the two main settings. Great cinematography. Grave fucking scene was obviously pretty grim but otherwise I didn’t feel like this was that outrageous. Maybe the movie doesn’t succeed in having a Point, but I’m fine with the story

Could really have gone without the entire “but how did he do it!!!” sequence though

Man, this blows First Goal Wins out of the water, IMO; that’s probably the worst thing I’ve seen this year.

Oh I don’t care about the shock stuff. I only care that it doesn’t have much to say about anything. And that goes for the shock stuff as well. I like my transgressive shit to have some weight behind it.

Spent some time wading through reviews of Promising Young Woman after reading the earlier posts in this thread. I know in my own life, survivors were split in half on how they felt about it. And it’s interesting to see how non-universal the takeaway and perceptions of it were/are. I’d like to sit down with it again soon to see if I perceive it differently than I did when I first saw it.

With Saltburn (because it’s about a less personal topic) it’s been fun to read through everyone’s thoughts on it both positive and negative. I’ve been pretty jaded about the state of films these last few years. I’ve really enjoyed having something this polarizing and ultimately inoffensive to discuss and debate. Admittedly I may just not have been paying attention enough, but it feels like it’s been a while since there’s been something this polarizing that’s been fun to see all sides of.

I don’t think the movie itself is trying to say something and I think that’s okay. Whether or not Fennell thinks she’s saying something is a whole other thing and I have no insight on that. But I’ve enjoyed having something to sit with that wasn’t just superhero saturation or bland reboots and unnecessary sequels. I still have no idea how I feel about Saltburn but I’ve certainly been entertained.

    TL;DR: it’s fun

I don’t think that’s what it was saying. And I know I’m nobody, and it’s not by or saying much, but I enjoyed more of this than I did Maestro. Both are heavily flawed.

  22. It's insane how much that "plot twist" master plan sequence made me actively dislike this considering I LOVED pretty much everything else about it. I mean, it looks GREAT -- the aspect ratio, the film grain, the colors, the shot composition -- and I love the way the time period sets up the soundtrack. Great performances. I didn't spend the runtime thinking the movie was trying to say anything, but I did think Oliver's motives were unclear...until they were made WAY too clear. To me, it was a fun black comedy and thriller (Parasite by way of Single White Female) until literally the last 10 minutes when Fennell shoots herself in the foot by trying to make it anything more than that.

So incredibly frustration. But honestly, ending aside, I still really enjoyed it.

  23. See above, I did and I didn't. 7/10 (but I go easy on things that keep my attention). Also, it makes me want to revisit PYW because I thought that was fine until everyone I know told me I wasn't supposed to like it. Don't remember much about that one except for the ending also beating you over the head.
