Feel like this movie is really resonating with people who don't watch a lot of movies. It sounds completely arrogant but I feel like it's just people talking about how this is "high art"

Things can be dumb and entertaining, y’all. I am beginning to suspect that many of you went into this movie thinking it was going to have a specific perspective or motive. Sometimes people just want to write and direct goofy things with actors who are down. See: John Waters.

That’s all well and dandy but I don’t think that this movie was trying to be goofy, imo. I would have appreciated it more if was

lol, this conversation is making me regret not watching this during my Amazon Prime free trial over the holidays. So much vague talking around the idea of “camp.”

Putting the director of Promising Young Woman in the same category as John Waters is madness imo.

I had fun with this movie but it is not good and the director was definitely not going for camp

"For instance, in Saltburn, there's Barry Keoghan's nude dance to Murder on the Dancefloor, which I worked on with an amazing editor, Victoria Boydell. It's something so joyful, post-coital, euphoric and camp – all of the things that song is. I don't mind feeling uncomfortable or rather I do mind it, but I'm interested in it. I don't mind making somebody deeply uncomfortable. That's an exposing thing."

She's said this so she was definitely thinking camp for at least some of it lol.

I'm not exactly sure about the finer details of what camp means but from the slight understanding I do have of the word this film very much feels like it.

would not disagree that this movie is camp, but I don't think that necessarily means that the movie was trying to be goofy

I think the disconnect here is that it's campy in the excessiveness of the designs and dramatic flair of the deliveries, but without an explicit sense of irony that lands on the side of poking fun at itself

definitely think this will be a cult classic amongst a certain population

I wouldn't say goofy really either although I also don't think it's overly serious and at times the humour is based in it's own ridiculousness.

This movie is incredibly campy in tone. Everything and everyone is over-the-top, eccentric, and so completely "off" that it leaves one on edge because it doesn't feel real. Where I think it throws people off the scent is that the film looks great and has established talent. Camp doesn't have to always be the white trash John Waters/b-horror movie aesthetic.

There was a TikTok about that. Movies like this are shocking and transgressive to people who watch five new movies a year.

I know debating what is and isn't camp can be futile and exhausting, I just think a few things are missing to call this camp. I like the working definition of camp as pretending to do a thing while actually doing it. She's not skewering anything here, it's not trying to be anything, it just is what's laid out on screen. It's over the top and excessive, but to what end? Camp doesn't even necessarily have to be saying something, but there needs to be an intentional artifice and knowing that the audience picks up on.

I feel like “unintentional camp” is pretty famously a significant, beloved category, lol.

Lol you're right and didn't mean to imply it wasn't, but also don't think that applies here either since she was trying really hard to do something.

But unlike here unintentional camp isn’t usually used to defend the film or the filmmaker. It’s just one of those this is so bad it’s enjoyable kind of things

Oh I haven’t seen this yet and don’t disagree. (Though I tend to reject “so bad it’s good” as a way to describe that ‘cause imo it’s more about being the “right” kind of “bad.”) Just throwing that out there ‘cause it seemed like intent was becoming too much of the defining thing in a way that didn’t make sense to me, lol.
