Sorry I was out of line. That's a sentiment I often feel with films and then when I try to write why it wasn't for me it looks very aggressive

  4. You're fine lol literally didn't think twice about it. My biggest pet peeve when it comes to media discussion, and this happened all the time on AP but less here, thankfully, is when people act like their taste is above everyone else's without a hint of irony. In my opinion, disagreeing with someone while discussing why something worked or didn't work for you is infinitely more interesting than, say, calling a director with only two relatively well-received films the worst alive or whatever other hyperbole people feeling like using to throw their weight around. That's why this thread irks me (even though I thought this movie wasted so much potential!) and why I love The Horror Thread. I know it's probably just something I'm sensitive to, but the snobbery makes me 1000% less interested in good faith conversations because I know the only replies I'm gonna get to putting my genuine thoughts out there are shitposts.

It isn't hyperbole, though. Who is worse? Maybe Jason Reitman?

There are so many mediocre movie directors pumping out slop by committee. I’m not a fan of any of Emeralds movies but they’re original stories that take swings. I’d rather that than some jobber pumping out a by the numbers Marvel movie or some bland dad action movie.

this movie looks incredible. Its competently made even if the story is mediocre

I’d rather watch Saltburn 5 times than watch 3 Paul WS Anderson movies

  10. I agree with the sentiment, but at the very least, Event Horizon and Alien vs. Predator would like a word

Best I can do is one of the Resident Evils and Monster Hunter

The only Anderson film I have seen is Mortal Kombat, but that one is much better than Fennell's two films.

There have been quite a few talented directors forced into making Marvel films, but ultimately the role of the director in those mega-franchises is limited. It is much different than someone who gets to write and produce the films they direct.

  15. The sequel is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, but the first one is a lot of fun. Takes a hit from being PG-13, but you get plenty of alien fighting and a pyramid that rearranges every half hour or so. Plus, the rating meant that I was able to introduce myself to both franchises at once as a pre-teen.

I think subjectivety is unfairly viewed as lesser that objectivety. Art is not effectively measured by systems. The speacial magic The God father has is real because of how it effects people, subjectivety is our best tool to express its effects.

Consensus voting is subjective to who gets to be counted and It falsely asserts the idea that arts is lesser if it has a narrower scope.

I love that it is not sport and there are no winners, to discuss art you need to tell people who you are and what you think about the world.

Every time I check this thread it gets funnier. Instead of coming around to talk about this piece of trash of a movie (not hyperbole) the conversation has devolved into just how strong should the language be when talking about shitty movies. This is the conversation rightfully sparked by Saltburn, keep it up

This is why it is so concerning when people try to create some sort of objective barometers for art. If the only films we are allowed to mock are stuff like The Room then virtually every major release has artistic merit and should not be examined critically.

A major character humps the grave of their dead unrequited love.

Nobody’s saying you can’t say this movie is bad or mock it. It’s just the “this is the worst movie ever made by the worst living director” shit is pretty extreme, and said way too often

It isn't the worst film ever made (American Beauty and mother! are much worse), but she is the worst living director. Someone has to be the worst director, just like someone has to be the best. Different opinions are what make discussing art fun, not tight parameters of how much people are allowed to respond to something. I would much rather read a glowing review of something I hated or a scathing attack on something I loved. That is how you learn about art from different perspectives.

I’m not saying I think she’s a good director, but why does her as a director keep getting brought up when everyone seems to be mostly shitting on her writing? I think she’s a far worse writer than a director. It’s just my opinion obviously, but I don’t think either of her movies are poorly directed and my problems with both come down to the writing. She just needs to stop writing her own movies or find a collaborator.
