there's a ton of "this is the best album I've ever heard" in the music forum on the release day of new albums, it's absurd.

 

Exactly most stuff is too benign and dull to elicit that response

I won't go hard for Juno since I haven't seen it in a while and this thread bums me the fuck out, but I will go hard for the soundtrack

We judge competency of filmmakers by how much we like or dislike their work. The same as we do for musicians or painters.

 

It takes a lot for me to absolutely hate and/or loathe a film. I can usually find something enjoyable or that I appreciated even in a mess. It says a lot, personally, when I rate something two stars or lower.

 

I somewhat disagree. I do think that art should consumed/enjoyed subjectively, but there are benchmarks in music and film that dictate the direction of the art form. There are seminal works for a reason. Citizen Kane isn't just highly regarded because more people liked it than disliked it.

i love to declare albums that are only a few days old “the best album ever made” bc i’m not being serious but i am being true to my feelings in the moment

i also could be accused of liking everything but i definitely don’t. i especially don’t like emerald fennell movies

i think incompetency is a pretty objective criteria, but also incompetency can be fun if it’s in the service of something outrageous, like i love david decoteau movies bc they’re very gay and not very subtextual about it and they’re all fun goofy hangout movies even when there’s murder or supernatural worms, and it doesn’t matter that i can see the boom mic or the camera operator in some of the shots (if anything that *adds* to it)

saltburn was actually a very competently made movie, shot well, etc. but in the service of a whole lot of nothing afaic. very few good or interesting images that told us anything about the characters or their relationships! boring even though a ton of stuff happened!!! the only “trashy” movie i’ve ever seen that was completely uninvolving. like wtf

 

people like to always trot out “just because you don’t like something doesn’t make it bad” but refuse to admit that just because they like something doesn’t make it good

 

okay why is Venom 2 being lumped in with Devils Wears Prada did I miss something

 

venom 2 is bad but incredibly fun and DWP is good but a buzzkill
