I hated Skinamarink but to just write it off as boring or bad and not see it as a massive attempt at something unique is fairly shortsighted.

Loved Skinamarink. Wild theater experience. So many walkouts. People utterly flabbergasted when it ended. But it felt kind of revolutionary if I’m being honest, and there were moments of sheer terror.

Totally get why people hated it though.

Maestro left me so cold, and I loathed what Infinity Pool became.

This movie is so bad the whole thread is just a discussion about what movies everyone thinks are bad.

    my wife unfortunately loved it

    Maybe so, maybe not.

I know Murder on the Dancefloor is getting all the shine—and it's a song I have loved since its release—but the use of Perfect (Exceeder) was one of the only other redeeming qualities of this movie. Underrated banger.

Skinamarink made Slant's best of the year. I have not seen it, though.

It's definitely unique but also boring and bad imo!

I found “Heck,” the short film it’s based on, really unnerving. It tapped into some core childhood fears of mine. “Skinamarink” just felt like they took that and made 10x longer and less effective.

  13. Skinamarink was the first film to scare me as an adult. It's an excellent, unique debut and there's a lot more going on than meets the eye. Feels very Blair Witch Project-adjacent, but for the 2020s.

  14. Re: it's boring when someone likes everything

I disagree. I certainly don't like everything, but I tend to find something I like about most things because I genuinely love movies and gravitate towards films I'm interested in seeing. I much prefer this to being someone callously tears down everything I watch

If you choose to watch things that you think you'll like, then criticism is fair, but if you're like me and watch everything playing at AMC just to maximize your A-List subscription, you shouldn't complain about bad movies

people also have a very hard time deciphering between "bad" and "I didn't like"

I think it goes without saying that Martin Scorsese and Tommy Wiseau are different levels of filmmakers, however I know people that love The Room and hated Killers of the Flower Moon

as far as making a top 10 list or whatever though, I do think people should be subjective

So Scorsese is objectively good and Wiseau is objectively bad? What is the rubric?

Art is subjective. Obviously there are some opinions more widely held than others, but it isn't "wrong" to hate Citizen Kane and to love Jaws 4. The only objectivity in film is the running time and the aspect ratio.

The thing with people beating up on something like The Room is that it doesn't really tell us anything about our values or our philosophies of storytelling. The Room in incompetently made by a cast and crew of amateurs. However, films like Saltburn or American Beauty or Juno or mother! or Three Billboards are made by professional filmmakers with large budgets and an experienced cast and crew. There is a much more interesting conversation to be had between people who love and hate those movies versus laughing at dropped plot threads and nonsensical lines of dialogue.

If there's zero objectivity as to if a film is good or bad then how can you judge competency of the filmmakers?

I agree that it's not "wrong" to prefer Jaws 4 to Citizen Kane, but I do think there's some objectivity when it comes to discussing the craft involved in the making of both.

    edit:
Not claiming I know the first thing about film, but maybe, the framing, camera movement, lighting, composition... Something like Battlefield Earth is widely considered "bad" because of the diagonal framing of every shot.

My initial post was about how people, everywhere, have to be so extreme. It’s never “eh I didn’t like it” but a lot of “worst piece of dogshit ever made!”

theres 3 movies in my life I ever felt that way. But there’s people who post like that like 5 times a year
