Kinda blown away by this. Lot of cool stuff going on here that make it stand out from the usual pop tropes.
Similarly, I avoided "Please Please Please" until today. Don't love that one. "Taste" and "Good Graces" are insane though, really vibing with "Bad Chem" too. This is very good so far
Yeah, not into "Please Please Please" or "Dumb and Poetic" but the rest of this is, in fact, very stupid and very good. This thread describes it better than I could. She's saying the quiet parts of pop music out loud and it's very funny. Like the "Mark your territory" line in "Juno" is the cringiest shit ever but then the "I'm so fucking horny part" totally redeems it. If the album isn't musically cohesive, it definitely is thematically
I’m still not sick of Espresso. It might truly be one of the best songs ever written. I’ll die on this hill and I don’t even drink coffee. this album is aggressively okay otherwise but I mean that as a weird compliment. There isn’t a single miss or skip on here but also no song comes close to Espresso. Fun though, will def spin some more.
I think it’s still my favorite here, and I like the album a lot. Just a truly perfect pop song to me. It finds a pocket few pop songs ever had for me. TSwift’s Style was that way, and I still feel similarly about that one 10 (!) years later.
I just noticed today there’s an extra high harmony she adds in the second chorus of “Please Please Please” during the, “don’t prove I’m right” part that sounds sooooo smooth.
It honestly surprised me just how good of a singer she is. like I knew she was good but wow. Incredible performances on this record.
Juno my fav on first listen She's the funniest of the current group of rising pop stars and it isn't even really close
I think espresso and please x3 are the first pop songs I felt like I basically heard in their entirety through passive means (ads, memes, etc) before I heard them on the radio or streaming. That said I am firmly in the “espresso is incredible” camp. slim pickins and please are the only misses for me after 2 listens. I’m surprised by how diverse this album is, so i didn’t expect to see some of the bending comments. interestingly, when I discovered her last record several months ago I didn’t realize how big she already was and didn’t know her background, so I thought that album had a very chill singer-songwriter vibe to it that wouldn’t stick much outside of “feather,” and this one feels like a proper “I’m a giant pop artist now” release. Actually, @Kiana i remember checking out emails I can’t send bc you made a comment hoping she would evolve into one of the next big pop stars. Manifested!
She’s really fun live too. Saw her at Coachella earlier this year and I’m going to see this tour with my mom and sisters in a few months (2nd show they’ve seen other than Eras)
Strongly considering going to Chicago but my god it’s expensive. I can stomach spending for good seats but the fees are obscene.
I’ve got nothing against espresso but it does nothing for me really. Like it’s a fine song but every time I’ve seen it referenced as the best song of the year I feel like Jason Bateman in arrested development reacting to Ann. Please please please smokes it in my book.
